New laws could mean children disappear from TV, say broadcasters

Children could disappear from our television screens if the Government decides to press ahead with plans to tighten regulations covering their appearance in entertainment, broadcasters claim.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families is putting the finishing touches to proposals aimed at clarifying the rules governing reality shows such as Britain’s Got Talent and Boys and Girls Alone, which campaigners claim can cause children unnecessary distress.

The television industry is braced for a fierce battle with children’s charities and the Government over the proposals, which will suggest that programme makers must obtain a licence from a local council virtually every time they want to include a child in a television show. Councils also want the power to do spot checks on production sets.

The department originally intended to publish proposals last week, but last-minute submissions by broadcasters have forced it to delay. The head of one production company said: “You’ve got a whole range of people who want a super-nanny state where kids aren’t even allowed to watch television, let alone work on it. This debate will be acrimonious, to say the least.”

Re: New laws could mean children disappear from TV, say broadcasters

This reminds me of another Labour Party idea of years ago, if memory serves me well they decided that it was wrong to make children compete with each other .. it was wrong to have winners and losers since the losers would suffer psychologically about being second rate .. possibly not the exact wording of the stories that circulated but close enough ..

Obviously we are not allowed to fail exams either and EVERYONE must be a winner in their books .. I wonder if that also means that ANYONE applying for employment must be given it ... after all, it must be distressing to go for an interview and not get the job ....

don't get me wrong .. but once the kid has appeared it's already too late .. They don't disappear after that until they hit late teens when they rarely come home and then they go after they become "broody" creating their own home

You are truly a very wise man! And actually, broody is the mildest description of their "condition"!

What is wrong with the United Kingdom?

Honestly, I think they are taking the nanny state way WAY too far...

Ever wondered why I live in Greece .. here they have a democracy resembling anarchy. Everyone does as they please. No-one seems to worry about what you are doing unless you have upset them. However they had better make sure all their skeletons are safely locked away in hidden cupboards first or it becomes a domino affect, you'll even be blamed for something that was done before you were born and have trouble proving your innocence over exaggerated of course but speaking from personal experience it happens and has happened!

In the UK it's the Labour Party trying to play the Communist role and allow everyone to have everything whilst being equal. Just like the Communist Party though, Politicians are more equal and get a better cut of the cake and also in charge of making the rules

To be honest, we got a bean-counter for a 'Prime Minister' and a load of toadying lackeys as his supporters.
