NASA's mission to bomb the Moon

NASA will tomorrow launch a spectacular mission to bomb the Moon. Their LCROSS mission will blast off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying a missile that will blast a hole in the lunar surface at twice the speed of a bullet. The missile, a Centaur rocket, will be steered by a shepherding spacecraft that will guide it towards its target - a crater close to the Moon's south pole. Scientists expect the blast to be so powerful that a huge plume of debris will be ejected.

It is about time they bombed the moon. I hope they destroyed that alien base that was setup by the intergalactic commission to monitor earths affairs.

If something goes wrong and the whole moon blows up, wouldn't that affect earth's low and high tides?

I dont think we would have to worry about that, we will not be around to know. If the moon blew up, I would almost bet that the fragments would enter earths atmosphere and clobber earth causing the end of life as we know

Actually if Humans are still Alive or living (Keywords) on Earth in a few hundred thousand years we wont have to worry about the moon because by then it would of collided with Earth. Apparently the moon has a decaying orbit.

I read that the moon is actually getting further away at a rate of about 1' per year.

Wow, this is really neat. It's cool that we are finally getting serious about going to the moon again. It'll be awesome to see men on the moon durning our lifetime for those of us that were not here the 1st go round.

Hey, under this administration they have bombed the stimulus with out of control give-aways (and about everything else they have touched) to help the economy (which has not been helped), why not bomb the moon?
