Ah, crazy idea for a program!

Hi -

I was thinking of making a program (VB/VB.NET/C++) that basically controls what registry keys get added from a program you choose. This could be very useful because I've gotten some really stupid registry changes before due to carelessness, but running this would notify you of ALL changes, and let you choose to accept or deny.

Is there already a program such as this? Because this seems really really really really really useful, I mean.. REALLY useful.

This could also be used for spyware & virus prevention.

Thoughts? Opinions? Don't steal my idea, LOL. Just kidding, I don't care - as long as I get a copy :P

Re: Ah, crazy idea for a program!

Hi Windy,

It's actually a brilliant idea, it will be very helpful especially to us noobs when it comes to registry. I haven't heard of a program like that, if there's one definitely a malware. lol!

Re: Ah, crazy idea for a program!

Tea Timer in Spybot S&D already does this. Works great. Good idea though.

That's one stupid - I call it lazy - bit of programming that's been a fundamental flaw with MS since the first Win program 20 years ago that MS has never bothered to change. In my view, programs should request info from the OS but never be able to change anything in the OS. Basically a one-way flow of data from the OS out to the programs not a two-way flow.

Re: Ah, crazy idea for a program!

Are there any flaws with it's programming (that are extremely noticeable) so I could maybe either edit their program, or make my own fixing them?

I was also gonna say TeaTimer. It's really good because it intercepts all sorts of things. If it's not on the whitelist (which you can control as well) it doesn't go through to the registry.

Yeah, Tea Timer, excellent, it's perfect for 'high risk' systems.

Tea Timer :))

It has a Paranoid mode which asks you at any unknown or you can set it to default which blocks only known bad reg entries.

Re: Ah, crazy idea for a program!

It doesn't always work though, I got a Virut infection a while back, and while it may have stopped it from going all the way, it got far enough that I had to wipe everything out and start over fresh.

The bad thing is AVG caught it as soon as I executed the file, and I denied all registry changes, but it was still too late.

Re: Ah, crazy idea for a program!

If you guys take a look at RegFromApp (I think it's the name) or API Monitor - they're both detecting like 30 reg changes a second. I mean, come on. When I make a program, the registry is full of changes everytime you run it.

Does Tea-Timer detect 30 reg changes per second?

Re: Ah, crazy idea for a program!

If you aren't doing anything, there shouldn't be any reg changes at all. Even installing something it shouldn't be making 30 reg changes total, much less in one second.

Re: Ah, crazy idea for a program!

Everytime you change a setting in a program, it has to change something somewhere - and if you're using Windows, it's most likely to affect the Registry or a INI file in it's directory or whereever. But, that's not the point. I'm asking if Tea Timer has any "flaws" or anything that's really annoying that you'd like to see changed in any future versions.

Tea Timer seems perfect to me, not annoying at all.

Re: Ah, crazy idea for a program!

What do you mean 'didn't get it at all'? You install, then that's it, nothing to get, Spybot does it all on it's own.

We're talking about TeaTimer here . . .

I just didn't like it's GUI; it was too compact.

Geez, you certainly like following me.. I think someone has a crush on Windy!

Re: Ah, crazy idea for a program!

What? Tea Timer is the name of the process that detects changes in the System Registry. used by Spybot Search and Destroy.
