NKoreans mass at rally in capital to denounce US

http://www.optimum.net/News/AP/Article?articleId=577105
Quote:
Tens of thousands of North Koreans shouted slogans to denounce international sanctions at a rally in central Pyongyang on Thursday, as the communist country vowed to enlarge its atomic arsenal and warned of a "fire shower of nuclear retaliation" in the event of a U.S. attack.

Ever hear the story of "crying wolf" too many times? I think we have heard this type of rheotorical hype out of them for the past 40 years in one form or another, so what else is new?

The saddest thing is that our county is so financially depleted and emotionally bankrupt these jokers (Iran too IMO) are just poking at us hoping we got nothing left.

In World War II we had a depression and went to war, that fixed the economy. I have a bad feeling...If conflicts start and there is no peaceful alternative, World War III begins, I'd think a nuke going off in a country is a lot of drama and something that cannot be ignored. heh unlike previous wars, it was infantry/tanks/planes/etc wars(with exception to the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki). Image wars of the future, if there is a future.

Conventional wars back then was predictable. Tanks, planes, troops. Now with nukes, entire nations can be wiped out overnight. The North must realised this, US nuke arsenal is a hundred times more and can wipe them out over and over again a few times. Guess thats why they call is MAD

Besdies the protest are just tens of thousand. Those ppl could have easily been coerced by rewarding them with food or perhaps the threat of firing squad

Well, MAD doesn't really apply in this case: mutually being the missing link. I doubt NK has enough nukes to destroy the US, or the rocket technology to reach the mainland US. They don't have anywhere near as capable of a navy, so sending a boat over won't work... They're pretty much just annoying....

I don't think they'll need to destroy an entire nation. Just one well-placed bomb in New York or LA could ruin America. And never underestimate a country, that's the reason most wars in history were lost by a country.

Beefers is right, if the USA gets hit once. It will spread panic, fear and anguish around the country and probably other foreign countries too.

But I believe, in the end, we would probably survive as a nation. I mean, Japan got hit with TWO of them, and they are doing fine now... Are you saying we can't bounce back? Granted, nuke technology has advanced since then, but several hundred thousand people dying at once in two different instances would be pretty devastating regardless...

I don't think one hit would destroy us, but....nukes are much more powerful than in world war II. Being nuked, we would have to spend money to help the survivors with radiation, rebuild the area. It's a lot of money lost.

Re: NKoreans mass at rally in capital to denounce US

Actually, it's not the impact of the nuke that actually hurt Japan, it was the toxins and poisons left over from the nuke. I have read about it, nor know a lot about the war or nukes, but from what I've heard the poisons and after-affects are much more devistating.

If someone were to nuke the US, they'd most likely hit popular areas. So goodbye New York and Washing D.C..

I know that, that is why I mention we would have to help the radiation survivors. New York...uhhh that's a problem....:(

Re: NKoreans mass at rally in capital to denounce US

Reminds me of this Hardy Boys Casefiles novel, Edge of Destruction. This guy and his mob kidnapped Fenton (Frank and Joe's dad) and gave the entire city 3 days to pay a $20 million ransom (a large amount back in the 70's, especially considering NYC was going broke at that time) or he'll release a virus into the plumbing and ventilation systems. Aside from the million or so dead, Manhattan would've become uninhabitable for a long time.

I doubt North Korea would actually do anything. Look what happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Someone had to back down sooner or later, and I don't think it'll be any different if we do escalate to that level of tension (especially since North Korea is nowhere near being a superpower).
