I done it again ya'll!

Hi -

As some of you may know; I have a slight problem keeping my OS in good shape, so I constantly re-install, which I just did on my primary PC right now (I'm using my secondary one as of now, until I get more information). The whole point of this thread is to give you a list of the programs I THINK I need and the ones I want, and for you to butcher it or agree, since some may be bad (I'm not sure).

Help? :

Anti-Virus Removal:
- NOD32
- Malwarebytes

Internet Browser:
- K-Meleon

Media Player:
- Winamp

Email Client:
- Thunderbird (EHHH, Should I?)

Other:
Visual Basic 2008 express edition
pidgin IM client

Consider SharpDevelop instead, that's if you haven't yet seen/used it...just my opinion, but from the basic work with VB.Net that i did(some time ago) i preferred it.

I don't know how it compares to VB Express '08 but it was definately better than '05.

As for virus removal/protection, i use a combination of:
- Spybot S&D (general, once a week check)
- A-Squared Free (mainly because it has a deep scanning function and pics up a lot of trojans)
- Comodo Firewall (Free), because it's a nice firewall.

Still that's down to you.

Re: I done it again ya'll!

Actually, there's a thread lying around on Offline that shows all my re-installation history - and there's a lot. I like to re-install, it keeps your computer neat and clean, and can't hurt it one bit, so it's a win-win situation.

What do you guys use for fun (except games) like uTorrent, mIRC, etc?

Re: I done it again ya'll!

O.K. lets take it from the top.

1.) AVG free 8.5 "without the toolbar" running as my virus scan engine while also providing anti spyware prevention detection and removal.

2.) Spyware Terminator as my real time spyware protection, host intrusion prevention system, web security guard, application guard, internet guard and system guard all while still providing anti spyware prevention detection and removal.

3.)Win Patrol 2008 which if used to it's full potential almost has too much to mention although I will mention this that this little guard dog may not be big on hogging resources but it does offer real time protection and notices really just about any kind of system change being made and also comes with what would be the equivalent of Trend Micro's Hijack This.

4.)Adaware Anniversary Edition I run at least biweekly just to get some of those little sticky cookies that some other programs will miss most of the time.

5.)Spyware Blaster is installed and like all the rest of these fine free pieces of software always stays updated and although there is no scan engine offered it is a good preventative anti spyware app and almost uses no memory to keep running.

6.)Spybot S&D which I am personally using as a scanner and host file protector only as I went with the customer install and due to the real time protection that is already prevalent on my system.

7.)Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool that I run approx every 5th or 6th day.

8.)Firefox for a browser.

9.)VLC is my media player.

This has been working excellent for me since the beginning of the year with the most recent program being Spyware terminator that has become a vast part of my security suite.

Let me know what you think and if you search for a program and it seems hard to locate just let me know and I am pretty sure I remember or at least can track down and provide a link to the application.

Re: I done it again ya'll!

Seriously, you should. There's lots of speed tweaks you can do in it's "registry" (of sorts), it's basically the "about:config" of firefox. It's also completely customizable since it's open-source, and light-weight.

I did try it on my oldest machine and it opens about what I wanna call about 35% faster which is awesome now on the flipside I was forced to load Yahoo Classic as it would not load the newer Yahoo Mail and I kinda feel stuck since since I have a few add ons in FF I use like on a daily basis and do not know how to add anything to k-meleon.

Re: I done it again ya'll!

I think K-Meleon would become a lot more popular if they had support for Firefox extensions/plugins. K-Meleon really does have potential.

Re: I done it again ya'll!

To a programmer, an open-source browser is good, and Firefox is all hype to me - just like Opera, Safari, etc. Maybe, not "hype", but "overrated".

BTW, I'm a programmer, so I try and mess around with K-Meleon, tweak it, make it better. It's interesting, actually.

I'm not saying Firefox isn't good, because it's actually a very excellent browser, but it just didn't do anything for me, same with Inigma Browser, IE, Etc.
