Re: I Could Care Less

But petroleum is unrefined black stuff that is found under ground, where as gasoline is refined stuff you use to power your car

Re: I Could Care Less

From Wikipedia:

Most current or former Commonwealth countries use the term "petrol", abbreviated from petroleum spirit.

@ 40sondacurb again: like Done_Fishin said, if you go to The Hospital, you're visiting, not staying. It works for jail/prison, so why not for hospital?
- If you go to the prison, you're there to see someone.

I am no match for the queens English. My only hope is that Hollywood will continue to dilute British culture .

That "black stuff" as you call it is unrefined oil .. once refined it has many uses, one of which is petroleum spirit or petrol which powers petrol driven cars, another is Diesel .. others are the refined lubricating oils and greases

After what 9 years or so of French I can still barely read it.

In Quebec its not proper French its more like a mixture of English and French.
I can't give an example though. I live in Ottawa so Gatineau, Quebec is just a 5 10 minute drive over the Ottawa river. There is a lot of people who live in Quebec but speak English and they work in Ottawa.

Re: I Could Care Less

Well that the separatists political party which 95% of country view as total fools.

Ok, now to keep with this subject of odd country/language differences I want to exemplify my Country CANADA!

On the east coast Newfoundland they have a whole different accent than me and other Ontarian's. From Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, PEI, News Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba I think French is mandatory in school up to grade 9. That was east to west and then Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C don't have it I think they have French in school.

The country is very different over the length of it, which makes it an amazing country, just like the US we are all very different. You couldn't imagine a New York accented Mississippi town and all their small mannerisms. I love all the different ways people talk.

My girlfriend hates this but I prefer to the letter "H" as Haghe not aghe. If you talked to me in person you'd know how different people are from each other. I like using funny insults from Britain and I call people anything I kind of pick up from British Comedy. I love Monty Python and they have been a kind of inspiration for my randomness.

Re: I Could Care Less

We recently had a brilliantly excellent 'travelogue' with Billy Connolly (yes, THAT one ) travelling across Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. I can't remember exactly where he started his journey, other than it was the most Eastern point, but he was taking in all the various communities and 'oddities' he met on his journey.

The only thing wrong mcninja's list of examples above, is that the English and Canadians tend to add 'please' somewhere in a request:

English: Please hand me that torch.
American: Hand me that flashlight.
In Canadian: Please pass me that Flashligh

English: Hand me that spanner please.
American: Hand me that wrench.
In Canadian: Hand me that wrench please

A wrench is an adjustable spanner used frequently in plumbing and well known for rounding off ones' nuts ...

I don't call a wrench a wrench.
There are torque wrenches, crescent wrenches, adjustable crescent wrenches, etc.
