Re: Dedicated ram to Kaspersky

that's a strange sort of question .. if you mean having kaspersky sitting in a gig of memory so that you can scan and keep it apart from your other running config .. I think you may well be disappointed .. why not run your scans when you don't want to do any other work on your PC ?? Like when you are sleeping or away ..

Re: Dedicated ram to Kaspersky

It's highly unlikely that you will be able to do what you are saying since the problem is NOT the amount of RAM that the program is using but the fact that the program is running.

Whilst your PC is running it will be letting your AntiVirus (AV) scan every file that you open, that you download, every piece of info coming in from the Internet as webpages and possibly monitoring content of chat & incoming ports against dangers.

It is quite possible that you run a fullscan whilst you are doing your daily business plus all your files including your boot are running from a single non-partitioned drive.

Good housekeeping in the form of multiple partitions, cleaning out recycle bin, temp files, downloaded files, temp internet files etc will help you to speed up those scans by not scanning the same items over & over, especially the things that you have saved and seen to be safe. That's not to say that they can't be infected after scanning but for instance keeping smaller "active" bootable partitions separate from your saved downloaded content means that you can run the more important scans of "most likely to become infected files" ie those files used in booting without scanning everything whilst regularly running a full scan on your other files once a week during your off-peak or slack work periods.

Keep your PC tidy and free of Trash .. there'll be less to scan and thus make your scan times shorter.

I would suggest that I also move this thread over to security section where they can probably tell you a lot more than I can however as I understand it you can only change priorities regarding how software behaves rather than allocate chunks of memory to processes so as to make them finish faster or be less intrusive in your daily running.

Just say the word and I'll move this to a more appropriate forum ..

Re: Dedicated ram to Kaspersky

It's limited by your processor, and NOT your RAM. If you have a slow processor, you won't be able to speed it up even if you have a terabyte of RAM for it.

Re: Dedicated ram to Kaspersky

I have NOD32 and when the scanner isn't running or is, it only uses around 45mb of ram or so.

When I manually scan my AMD Athlon X2 6000+ (3ghz x 2) it sarts using up around 60%+ of my CPU power.

Re: Dedicated ram to Kaspersky

What is happening here is that you are dedicating more time to the scanning process and in particular areas of the PC .. the HDD's or disk surfaces.

because of the intensive behaviour of the scanning process your drive will be "locked up" whilst the scanning process reads the disk area for a file and then analyses content against signatures either held in memory or storage (disk area again). Whilst this is happening obvioulsy your drive head is going to be hovering over a particular area whilst reading then a second area when comparing followed by intermediate read / write accesses to the pagesys file or temporary folder as one tries to do other work at the same time. It's this constant changing of surface location and the intensity of the work being done by the CPU (jumping in and out of different programs and routines) that slows things down. Since scanning the PC is something that is CPU intense it is , as I have said before, far better to let the PC get on with it without trying to work along side of it. If that is not possible create a lower priority for your antivirus so that it takes a seat in the background when scanning .. it will take longer but won't be so intrusive
