Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

When i came across this link, it reminded me of a link i came across a while ago which was quite infomative as well. So here they both are.

70 Tips and Tricks in 7 - http://gnoted.com/70-fantastic-windo...functionality/
Guide to Windows 7 (ok it was for the Beta version but still pretty valid) - http://i.gizmodo.com/5150298/windows...yline=true&s=i

Another thing that i noticed...We have no section on anything to do with Windows 7. So if anyone with the necessary authority happens to read this, maybe it is something to consider. While very few of us can say we know all the in & outs or whether the features in the RC will change on final release, at least we can try come together and try. I for one know we as TSF could do this. SO lets keep up with the times already. So heres a poll as well to see what you think?

Re: Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

This has already been discussed actually. We are not going to support the beta version, because as you said, things are still going to change and there are probably plenty of bugs.

We will create a section for it when the final version is released. As a general rule (not technically a rule, but a guideline) is that we do not support beta software because there is no telling if the problem the user is experiencing is due to the software still being in it's beta form.

Re: Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

I have been running it since last tuesday for everything. It uses both xp and vista drivers. The only problem I had with it was with my logitech webcam 5000. Their software looks for a specific os and will not install. Fortunately I was able to navigate into the vista partition to the program files folder and run it that way.

The only real disappointment, i was looking forward to the xp virtual mode. It will not be for me since older computers (those that really need it) will not be able to run it because of cpu issues.

I cannot wait for it to go gold just to see if the users who rejected vista will go for win7. It works and looks just about the same, so much so that IMO, it should be just a service pack release.

Re: Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

I think Windows 7 is a decent step forward. I don't think it the savior we have all been waiting for, but it's good. Nvidia drivers, although they are Beta, are great. Much better than Vista. Device management seems to work pretty good. It actually figured out what my LG Incite cell phone was! Vista had trouble with that at first. I like it overall, very stable and everything seems to be working great.

Re: Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

Windows 7 is really great. Runs faster than XP on my rig and has all the good features of Vista. Not that I was unhappy with Vista, I liked it more than XP. But Windows 7 is much faster and the new task bar and the aero snap and jump lists and aero peek and all the other features are really great.

That is what us Microsoft gurus agreed upon, Yes.

Also, do you really think TSF's servers could take another forum? LOL

Re: Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

Hi, I believe Seven is much like 98se the basics stay the same just fine tuned (could probably have been called SP2+) for Vista. In Australia the Gov is rolling out Fiber- Optics to the Node for 98 % of the country, this opens up entirely different forms of computer use. Pity so much of the world lacks the expertise and will of Australia (not to mention the money).

I would be happy if they could handle what they have now, I often give up trying to get on, or post on this forum.

Actually, under the new proposal it is going to be an FTTP (Fibre To The Property) network.

Must say I quite like 7. Performance is good, extra features are handy. First thing I noticed when I started using the beta a few months ago is how much more 'responsive' it feels. Much better than XP and Vista, they just seem so sluggish in comparison.

Re: Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

I just installed and finished customising Win 7-64Bit and, to be honest, it rocks!!! Boot-up and usage is fast and responsive and it only took approx 12-15 minutes to install itself. The only problem I've got is that it didn't install my Creative X-Fi Extreme sound card and, so far, I haven't yet had a chance to do much googling on it.

Creative have some Beta drivers for it but they don't work, that's as far as I got

I haven't had much of a chance to discover what everything is, yet - I don't use or like any of the Vista flavours, so everything is a new discovery

Re: Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

Somethings you might miss:

-You can easily pin any item to the taskbar by dragging the icon to it.

-If there's already one icon pinned to the taskbar that is of the same "type", it is pinned to the context menu. for example, if you have the libraries icon already, which is explorer.exe, if you drag the computer icon, it will be pinned to the context menu of the library icon. and if you drag an html file and you already have your browser pinned on the taskbar, it goes to the context menu of the browser.

-media player has controls on the hover thumbnail.

-you can drag and rearrange the taskbar icons.

-to open a new instance of a running taskbar icon, middle-click on it.

-to close windows with middle click, hover over the taskbar icon. when the thumbnails show up, middle click on the thumbnail of the windows you want to close.

-you can do a vertical-only maximize. to do this, do a vertical resize to the top or bottom edge of the screen. the other edge snaps automatically. another way to do this is putting your pointer on the top edge of the window. when it changes to the vertical resize arrow, double click it.

-you can easily un-maximize by dragging the titlebar. you do a half maximize by dragging the window to the left or right edge of the screen or a full maximize by dragging it to the top. (you've probably already figured that).

pressing windows key + number (1 through 9) takes you to the window of that icon on the taskbar. example, window key + 1 will take you to the window of the first icon on the taskbar. if that icon's window isn't already running, it will launch it. if that icon has multiple windows open, you can cycle through them by repeatedly tapping that number.

-libraries aggregate files/folders from multiple locations on your local computer/network. you can create custom libraries and specify folders to be monitored. libraries behave as normal folders in "save as..." dialogs. the files saved to a library go to that library's "default save location", which you can specify.

-you probably already know about "aero-peek"

-"shake" a window to clear your workspace. grab a window by its titlebar and shake it. all the other windows will be minimized. shake again to bring all the other windows up.

-to bring up the normal context-menu for a taskbar icon (XP and Vista style) you can shift-right-click. This is useful if you want to "minimize this group".

-if I drag an html file on the pinned IE icon on the taskbar, the file will be pinned in the context menu. but if I shift-drag the same file, it will be opened with IE.

-you can use the start menu search bar as a "run" dialog. (also in Vista)

-you can use a slideshow as your desktop background. right-click on desktop, personalize, select "desktop background" at the bottom, select multiple items with checkboxes, set the change interval, OK your way out.

-the menu bar is hidden by default in windows explorer. press "alt" to bring it up. (also in Vista). you can set it to show permanently by pressing "organize" -> "layout", then checking "menu bar".

-you can select multiple items in windows explorer easily with checkboxes. to activate this feature, press alt to bring up the menu bar, tools, folder options, view tab, check "use checkboxes to select items". (also in Vista).

-now my fingers are tired, so i'll stop. hope that helped.

Re: Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

Thanks Gogeta, there's lots there I haven't yet discovered

I had another look around Google and found that Creative have released updated Beta drivers for the X-Fi Extreme sound card (the one I had was for the last release of Win7) - A minute or 2 to DL, another 2-3 minutes to install and reboot and everything is now working perfectly

Must admit I do like 7 - and I wasn't very keen on Vista. As has already been said, boots quick, shuts down even quicker and I like the feel of it. So far so good.

I never need to install my sound driver for my sound card. W7 did automatically.

I really like the task bar!
A couple pieces of software don't like PC Wizard 2008, rivatuner (overclocking) but meh they don't matter much since its more stable than vista and it runs the games I have installed right now just fine.

I "overclocked" my Windows 7 by a large amount - I'm literally running it on the most minimum settings it can be set on which makes it as fast and a freakin' jet.

Re: Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

up til now was running Win7 Trial .. just checking out another hard drive so that I can install win7 RC .. My trial version supposedly requires activation and they suggest it's not legal .. thank M$ I forgot it was going to run out someday ..

Thought it was reasonable when I used it ..but with so many systems running and so many PC's I frequently disconnect this PC's hard drive and use it to recover drives and files. It's the only PC with 64bit capabilities (til my next mobo )

Done_Fishin, you can just choose to activate Windows to get rid of that notification. Once you activate the RC (and enter the key) you'll be able to run it until March 2010.

Re: Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

Win7 RC now installed with Key on another HDD .. I prefer practice the installation to keep in trim .. I hadn't installed a lot anyway .. I still have the PC components scattered all over my workbench anyway .. the box is waiting but it's far easier for me to play this way

I did try giving the RC key but I may have given a 32 bit Key by mistake .. since it came up with some error. I do at least have a better system now, the 80GB drive I used to replace the 20GB WD has brought me from 2.9 to 4.5 because my Graphics card is not particularly good . Until I get a better PSU I won't place a better graphics card on it ..

Problems so far .. my WiFi card 3Com 3CRDAG675B isn't recognised and I haven't found a way as yet to use the Vista driver .. I have replaced it with a D-Link GW-520+ which also refuses to install but haven't tried to search for a Vista or other driver

With some minimal tweaking i managed to get my rig which was rated 5.6 in Vista, to boost it to 5.8 with 7.
Shows how easy it is to O/C in 7.
If i had to do some major changes, i think i could get some serious performance out of ageing rig

Re: Windows 7 - Whats your opinion?

There has been a change in the rating system in Win 7. The max rating is now 7.9 instead of 5.9. So processors which maxed out the Vista rating of 5.9 may go higher. Also the rating doesn't increase linearly with overall performance and there are some other restraints (like rating >6.9 is reserved for future processors with 8 cores or more, etc.).

Here is the full description (13 pages):
