Re: Swedish Fire Log

WOW!!! Such a simple idea, but what a way to reduce fire-risk in risky areas, while camping. With some careful branch-crafting, it would make an excellent 'Kebab Grille' too

Re: Swedish Fire Log

I did have a good look around the site ( including backtracking through links) by using the utilities provided .. didn't think to play with the underscores! Well done that man!!

Looks like a great way to make a controlled fire should I ever get caught out in the Greek Forests (before they burn them all down) and require to keep warm ..

Re: Swedish Fire Log

I was thinking of if I ever make it back to a 'Glastonbury Festival' again, trying to light a fire on a mud-plain is very wearing on the patience

Re: Swedish Fire Log

You could make a couple of those at home and then just throw them in the back of a pickup.

These might even sell at a busy camp ground.

Re: Swedish Fire Log

I am proud to say i got it working this weekend at a house party.
Its not as simple as it seems at first. It took me a bout 3-4 small ones before i got it perfected for the party
Couple of tips:
* Get as big a log as possible. I had one that was about 50cm in diameter and 2m in height.
* Airflow, airflow, airflow...the last link taught me that. use small pieces of newspaper and bark. Otherwise there is not a nice even burn.
* Practice it once or twice with small logs to get the concept worked out.
* Figure out what works for you. I tried different wood when testing and settled on what worked for me. Each wood and stump will work differently...

Anyways, was interesting and want to try out again

Re: Swedish Fire Log

How long does the wood stay together? Do they supports hold for a long time or crumble soon?

Re: Swedish Fire Log

I was actually surprised how long it lasted.
One of the 8 sections fell out after 2-3hrs and it actually carried on burning for about 4hrs before i went to sleep.
The next morning, it was still burning, but the flames were obviously dead.
I think a shorter log would actually be better. Ours was 2m long with about a foot underground and we cut to about 2 feet from the bottom.

From my experience, dont even bother burying it into the ground, just make sure that its stable enough. Rather just get a shorter log

Re: Swedish Fire Log

I think the whole point about this is to have a controlled blaze .. and not an inferno

Re: Swedish Fire Log

Placing four together means you could open a 'Green' kebab shop in the countryside

Re: Swedish Fire Log

I want to make a 'potjie' on one...its a local tradition of cooking a huge stew for like 20 people in a cast iron pot for a few hours.
its genrally beef cuts with whole bunch of veggies, potatoes and donations of beer and wine thrown in during cooking.
Is actually quite awesome...
thats one of the reasons i tested it ... practice for a potjie...a potjie takes a good couple of hours
