The great debate

Charcoal or Gas? Slow and low or quick and high? Dry or wet? How do you cook outside?

Re: The great debate

Well here in South Africa, we are old school with our "braai" tradition... make big social events out of them. The "popular culture" section of the wiki is pretty accurate, except the chevy part, but it was in the 70's.
Everyone from kiddy to granny loves a braai
Its a very traditional version of a barbeque. There are unspoken rules that need to be followed. And never interefere with the designated Braaier. Its a honor that must be earned.

Re: The great debate

I rather have charcoal. A couple of years ago, I got rid of my charcoal grill and purchased a gas one. Never did have the right flavor so the next year I got rid of the gas and went back to charcoal.

Re: The great debate

I use gas. I got one of those large stainless steel ones as a father's day gift many years ago. It was my first gas after using charcoal for many many years.

Anyone who says they taste different is fooling themselves. Heat is heat. The taste comes from the smoke that comes from fat dripping onto hot coals. In my grill, there are ceramic plates between the burners and the grate. These get very hot, the fat drips onto them and puff - smoke flavor.

Besides, its the only one Mrs. yustr lets me get messy.

Re: The great debate

LOL

I do all of the outside cooking. Went to gas years ago because I am to darned impatient to wait for the coals to heat up and I would have to let them burn out an douse them and put them in a metal trash can.

Re: The great debate

I prefer charcoal, but currently only have a gas grill...with no gas tank...and a hole in the gas line.

So really I don't do much cooking outside, but maybe if/when I find a house to move in to.
