Yeah, I can twang a tune or two. I even went to classes for it quite alot of years ago.
I don't play it so much now but can still play 'House of the Rising Sun' note perfect. I've got two guitars. They make good wall ornaments. I still play them after a beer or two! |

What kinds do you have? Here is a picture of mine...It's nothing to brag about, but I can play it pretty well. As more experienced guitar players may notice, this is a 3/4 scale guitar (I got it when I was 9, hence it is on the smaller side).
Unlike most others, I play without a pick, which has it's good points and it's bad points (for example, a song such as Green Day's "Good Riddance" is more easily played without a pick). ![]() In the future, I may post song's I've played and mixed here, so keep an eye out. Both of mine are acoustic types.
One is an Epiphone, which is quite a good one. It cost a fair bit when I bought it back in the mid 70's. Being a reasonably good make it could be worth even more now than when I got it. I sometimes think about selling it because I don't play it much anymore. The other guitar is a Torre. I've never heard of that before or after and it was a bad guitar to play when I first I bought it. I saw it in a house I visited in the course of my job and made an offer on it. I got it for £20-00 (around $30 maybe?) I worked on that one and lowered the action and put some decent machine heads on it. A friend of mine was a fair artist and, as a birthday present, she painted a great design on it in raised glittery paint. This maybe sounds a bit amiss for a Spanish guitar but it really looks good. Funnily enough, since the work was done on the £20-00 guitar, I prefer to strum this one rather than the Epiphone. The Epiphone sounds nice though. |

I'm learning.
I'm trying to learn how to play an electric, but haven't had much luck so far.
Still workin' on it. Any ideas on how to speed up the learning process? I am trying a few chord drills right now, then will try a few songs I hear often. (I can't wait to do Creed's "My Sacrifice!")

:D My stock answer ,,,which is practice, practice,, and more practice. Do you know your major and minor chords? If not get a book and learn all you can. Get those calouses on those fingers and at least get as much time in as possible to practice. You get back what you put into it. If you can play by ear this is to your advantage,, most musicians don't ( especially the greats) read music. Later down the road if you feel you must go for it!, it neaver hurts. If your serious about wanting to be good stick with it even when you don't want to.....k? CaT_ =^..^= P.S. Speed will come later.

i use to play a little..............actually did it for a living for about 27 years. Worked out of Nashville for little over 8 years. Nothing ever big. Mostly worked as a sideman for a few of the stars, Mel Tillis, Johnny Paycheck, and Played on the Opry quite a few times, but nothing to really want to be braggin about.
Now, all i do is pretty much play for my own pleasure. Gettin older and nobody wants an old fart anymore. But, I still have a lot of fun playin even if it is just for me. The only guitar I have around the house anymore is an accoustic Ovation and I gave my Fender Tele to my youngest son who is learning, but is getting really nice with some of his jazz chops. And, I'm happy with that cause Jazz is my favorite stuff to listen and play too. Keep up the practice, but do it for you own enjoyment and dont let the bug bite you in the butt. It's a tough old world out there. Good luck, Laffctx |

I think that's quite alot to be braggin' about. I'd love to have done it.
I've got a friend who was looking after a few guitars while somebody he knew was moving house. I got to handle them for a while (with the owners permission). A couple of these were: A Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson 12 string. I'm an average guitar player (or was) but these guitars had something about them that made me sound a little better than I really am. I wished they were mine. I don't know what one would have cost me but I was almost tempted to start hunting for a Fender. |

You can find yourself a desent Fender Squire Stratocaster for around $200 - $250.............but to buy a genuine Stratocaster will cost you a good chunk of change.
I am really glad to hear that you enjoy playing for personal enjoyment...........actually i wish that is what i would have stuck to from the beginning...........i would probably be much better off financially. Memories and fantasies are great but they dont pay the bills or put food on the table regular enough to really brag about. Going out and busting your butt on a job for 30 years ................ Now that is something to be proud and brag about........raising kids to adulthood and always being there when they need you is a much greater pride and has a lot more bragging rights. I hope you good health and great wealth in everything you do. Keep on playing if it brings you peace.........for i truly believe that is what it was intended to do. Laffctx |

I don't plan to be in a band, unless it would be a non performing one.

But you are right though- playng by ear is a good thing with guitar since most songs are extremely hard in notation to decode. On a side note, I am now running a streaming MP3 server (AnalogX's version of shoutcast) and I'll probably be able to perform live online soon. |

Fox you're my hero!
Fox I play (pretty much) by ear also. It's a gift given by God, and man am I thankful for it. I own a cheap generic ('Johnson') guitar that cost about $200. It's not pro-quality, but it isn't one of those fall-apart ones, and it works fine for me. I've been playing for about 2.5 yrs, and I'd say I play very well (not at all to brag) for having taught myself. I can hold a decent improv lead, and since I'm left-handed and play rightie, I can change chords REALLY fast. I also play the bass [which kinda goes w/ guitar anyways] and drums, and a little bit of piano.
