The Colts offense is gonna be hard to stop .... Manning has so many options it's hard for the opposition to know who to cover.

I think I'd put my money on the Colts

Just had ten inches of snow that melted this week with the warmer weather and tonight and tomorrow, below freezing again...oh, right now it is snowing.........Yep, we do have that good ole boy from the Big Orange Country....Tennessee! Here we come New England and get that scoreboard warmed up so it can show high scores from that ole country boy Peyton!!!!!!

Sloppy surface could slow Colts receivers
B Associated Press
Thursday, January 13, 2005

FOXBORO, Mass. - The New England Patriots are preparing what may be the best defense against Peyton Manning and his speedy receivers: a frozen field.

The team left the Gillette Stadium grass uncovered through Wednesday's rain and Thursday's fog. With more rain or snow expected Friday and freezing temperatures for the weekend, the Indianapolis Colts' red-hot offense could lose its footing in Sunday's playoff game.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick knows a cold front may be as critical as his three-man defensive front in slowing down the Colts. But he certainly wouldn't turn the field into an ice rink just to help his team, would he?

``My job is not to pull weeds,'' he said Wednesday with an innocent-looking smirk. ``I have a lot of other things to do. Or rake the field and all of that. I'm sure that will all be taken care of.''

A coach like Belichick who delves into the smallest detail includes weather conditions in his planning, although he may not have the final say on field maintenance.

``I'm sure he's consulted on it,'' team spokesman Stacey James said Thursday, ``but it's a collaborative effort between our stadium operations people and the grounds crew.''

There's a 90 percent chance of rain or snow on Friday before a dry weekend with temperatures ranging from 20 to 34 degrees on Saturday and 16 to 33 degrees on Sunday with mostly cloudy skies. There'll be plenty of time for the moisture to turn to ice before the game's late afternoon start.

Colts coach Tony Dungy said the field conditions won't be a factor. But his team plays home games indoors in 72-degree temperatures, artificial turf and no wind.

``We feel like it's our nature'' to play in inclement weather, Patriots linebacker Roman Phifer said. ``We live up here. We play in it. We practice in it. So, obviously, that's something that we're used to.''

Other Patriots think a slippery field won't make a difference to the fifth highest-scoring offense in NFL history with 522 points and three receivers - Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Brandon Stokely - with more than 1,000 yards receiving.

``They beat people in cold weather. They beat people on turf,'' strong safety Rodney Harrison said. ``They're going to catch touchdowns. They're going to run the ball. It doesn't matter what surface they're playing on. They could be playing on hot coals. It doesn't matter.''

The Colts played just two games this season with a temperature below 65 degrees. They're 9-1 indoors and 5-2 outdoors.

Last season they lost their only two games in precipitation - a light rain at Jacksonville and occasional snow and 32 degrees at New England in the AFC championship game. This week they worked out indoors because their practice field was wet but they left the doors open to bring in cold air.

``When the field condition is a little bit different than usual, I might change my game a little bit, but I'm still a ball player, I'm still going to go out there and perform,'' said Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney, the NFL sack leader. ``It's going to be slow for us, it's going to be slow for them.''

Last season, the Patriots were 4-0 in rain or snow, then won playoff games that began with a temperature of 4 degrees against Tennessee and 32 degrees with light snow against Indianapolis. This season they are 2-0 in the rain.

The Colts ``have played in cold elements before. They've had success so we're not really going to let the weather be an excuse or a factor for us,'' Phifer said. ``We're not going to depend on the weather. We have to go out and execute ourselves, have a flawless game pretty much to have a chance to win.''

The Patriots also could be slowed by an icy field.

Could Bethel Johnson , their speedy kickoff returner, bring one back 93 yards for a touchdown as he did against Cleveland on Dec. 5 if the field is slick?

``If it's open like it was, I can run it back if it's snowing,'' he said. ``I've always been a believer (that) if you can run, period, no matter what the weather is or the surface, you can run. So it don't matter if it's snowing, if it's raining. If you can run, you can run.''

That's something Colts receivers Harrison, Wayne and Stokley do very well.

``It's January and we're in New England. It's not going to be 50 degrees,'' Patriots tight end Christian Fauria said. ``Your best bet is just to hope it's not minus 10.''

I've never bought into the warm weather team cold weather team thing. The Bears are a cold weather team but that doesn't effect to many teams from the south to come into Chicago and kick there hinders all over the field.
I believe there's a lot more to say for home field advantage. Even though it didn't help my precious Green Bay Packers one iota this last weekend. I'll be somewhat happy again when the dome team Viqueens go into cold Philly and get it handed to them. But once again it has nothing to do with warm/cold team but just the fact that Philly is way better than Minnesota.
All that being said, I'd love to see the Colts and Peyton win but like the Packers and Vikings the Colts have an atrocious defence. So even if by some miracle they make it past this weekend they just postpone the inevitable.
New England will win. And we will have to listen to morons tell us how they'd rather build their team around Brady (a proven winner) than Manning who can't win the big game. I bet they'd take Trent Dilfer over Peyton Manning too.
Defence wins championships.

My System

While I expect this to be on heck of a battle, in the end there are two truths that will bear out:

1 - Defense wins championships

2 - Mannings don't win championships

Peyton's number this year were incredible. But the weak defense (artificially "improved" since so many teams were playing catch-up, and therefore had to abandon the run) will allow New England to dictate the pace of the game.

Here's my impact player -- New England NT Vince Wilfork. His ability to collapse the center of the pocket on his own will force Peyton to throw earlier than he likes, resulting in a lot of incompletions early. Once you get in Peyton's head, he's done.

Final score

Patriots 33
Colts 17

Miller takes starring role
By Michael Felger/ Patriots Notebook
Friday, January 14, 2005

FOXBORO - Of the 53 players on the Patriots' roster, 52 are studying film of Indianapolis trying to figure out how to beat the Colts. One is looking at film trying to be them.

That would be third-string quarterback Jim Miller, who has taken the lion's share of the snaps with the scout team playing the role of Indy quarterback Peyton Manning this week. And given the subject, Miller's acting job has gone well beyond throwing the ball.

To give the Pats defense an accurate look, Miller has been imitating all of Manning's pre-snap gestures and mannerisms. He waves his arms and barks signals up and down the line. He pats his backside. He runs the play clock and calls out phony audibles.

By all accounts, Miller's imitation is dead-on.

``He's really done a good job, being patient with all those different adjustments and some of those ghost adjustments,'' said safety Rodney Harrison . ``For him to give us those looks, even the double-cadences, has been huge for us. He's really letting the clock wind down like Peyton would. He's giving a lot of different signals and calls.''

Miller said he's spent plenty of time in the film room trying to nail down some of Manning's habits.

``Hopefully I'll get an Oscar,'' he said. ``You try to simulate as much as you can, his mannerisms and what he does. Hopefully I do it well.''

Miller was asked if, like Manning, he's learned to complain toward the sideline after an incompletion.

``No, I haven't gotten that one down yet,'' said Miller.

But, it seems, that's the only thing he's missing.

``I mean, he really looks like Peyton - without the accuracy,'' said Harrison, laughing. ``I'm just kidding. Jim's my boy. But it really helps. When you get to the game you know exactly what you're doing because of so many reps.''

After last season's AFC title game win over the Colts, Bill Belichick gave backup Damon Huard a game ball for imitating Manning in practice.

Harris returns

The Pats added another street free agent to the secondary, signing former Patriot safety Antwan Harris, who wasn't even invited to camp this summer and hasn't played in a game all year. To make room, the Pats placed linebacker Eric Alexander (ankle) on injured reserve. . . .

There were no changes to the injury report, with Richard Seymour [news] (knee), Kevin Faulk [news] (knee) and Matt Chatham (hamstring) all questionable and missing portions of practice.

Field under cover

The field at Gillette Stadium, which was left exposed to the elements for most of the week, was finally covered under a tarp yesterday afternoon. That directive did not come from the league, which only requires teams to cover their fields the day before, and the day of, games.

Despite some rough spots around the edges, the field appeared to have held up well after being pelted with snow and rain the past few days. . . .

Belichick was asked whether being in the playoffs ever gets old:

``No, not this game,'' he said. ``This is the kind of game that you spend all year working for. Literally, since the first day of the offseason last year . . . it's all pointed to play at this time of year. It's a privilege and an honor to be in this position, to be able to compete, be one of the final eight teams, and we know we are going to have to play our best game against one of the very best teams in this conference if we want to keep playing. You don't get to this point if you are not a good football team. The Colts, they are one of the best.''

Hi mimo2005,

Funny, about half way thorugh the game I knew you would be writing something like that, so after the third quarter posted my frustration in the Rants and Raves section. My hat is off to your team. My assessment, Peyton Choked, Brady smoked!

Because here in boston , we remembered colt kicker trash talking here s the full story :

Mike Vanderjagt’s mouth is still causing trouble, even though he’s criticizing his opponents and not his coach and quarterback.

Vanderjagt’s remark, made shortly after Indianapolis dominated Denver 49-24 in the first round of the AFC playoffs. Speaking about the Patriots, he said “I think they’re ripe for the picking” in Sunday’s playoff matchup with the Colts.

Vanderjagt also said on WISH-TV in Indianapolis that, “I think they’re not as good as the beginning of the year and not as good as last year.”

Those comments stirred little controversy in Indianapolis, where his outspoken nature is well known.

It s all about respect in new england .
