Actually the term shortwave describes a certain set of bands, wavelengths (100-10m or 3-30Mhz). SSB is a type of modulation (i'd say the most popular on SW) besides AM, FM etc.

You can have a tech licence to operate on UHF/ VHF without code (morse).

Well and what do you do - you make your calls and see who you end up talking to (or listen for other people calling). Its kind of like randomly going into an unknown IRC chatroom - just more fun.
I usually had the most fun trying to achieve a contact over the biggest possible distance with as little power as possible. For example Germany-New Zealand with 5Watt.

The possibilities for Amateur Radio are endless. Packet Radio and VoIP are two areas where computers and radios are integrated. I haven't had the time to get Morse Code down all the way, so I haven't yet upgraded my license. But there are FCC proposals that would eliminate the code requirement for alot of extra privileges. It appears that we should see action on these proposals before the year is over.

Well they cant get enough "newcomers" interested in the hobby anymore so it was just a matter of time - so many other countries already did.

I learned CW in the army - was able to listen around 20 wpm, give maybe 25+ - but i just dont like it. I havent touched a key in probably 4-5 years.

Hey Sarkast, have you ever watched the Tony Hancock TV comedy show from the 1960's? There's an episode called The Radio Ham, sounds like your kind of thing.

First there was shortwave, then CB, now IRC... nothing changes really

DD is right. Its actually called EME (Earth-Moon-Earth). You need huge antenna arrays and the more power the better. Your antennas also have to be rotatable vertically and horizontally and the rotor programmable to follow a certain path - because obviously the moon is moving.

IMO its something for people with too much money. ;-)

If you've got that much power, couldn't you just bounce the signal off the ionosphere or something like that? (I'm guessing here, as I have no experience with long range radio transmission whatsoever)

LOL Well the important thing to note here is that on shortwave its (relatively) simple to bounce a signal off the ionosphere - and reach any place on our planet (depends on frequency, time of day, year etc though too).
EME is done on VHF/UHV. The higher frequencies dont bounce good in the atmosphere anymore - unless very special conditions exist. Generally the achievable distances on higher frequencies are much lower.

Imagine VHF/UHF signals bouncing off the atmosphere as good as shortwave signals do - you'd hear all "FM" radio stations from all over the USA in your radio at once. That wouldnt be pretty.
