Re: When and How much did you pay for your first computer?
1985 - BBC B+ micro. I can't remember how much it cost, but it came with a massive 64Kb memory, later expanded to 128Kb!!! I also had the Music 5000 'AMPLE' music synthesiser to plug into it, giving an 8-voice fully programmable synthesiser, which was later expanded to 16-voice by the addition of a'Music 3000' expander unit.
'AMPLE' stood for Applied Music Programmable Language Environment and the software was on a 16Kb chip that dropped into the ZIF socket, just to the left of the keyboard. ![]() Even now, I haven't found a keyboard that was more pleasant to use than the BBC Micro, a real pleasure to use ![]() I bought my first PC in '96, a Dell Dimension 200! Yep, a 200MHz CPU with 512Mb RAM. It really zoomed along, until the mobo burnt out approx 5-7 days after the guarantee expired

I refuse to answer on the grounds that I might incriminate myself.

Re: When and How much did you pay for your first computer?
Gateway 2000 (I don't remember anything more specific - except that it ran Windows 95 and was quite slow) for about $4k... Back in '97 or '98. Hint: Family comp., not mine in particular... First one I've bought is my current desktop... so nothing special...

Re: When and How much did you pay for your first computer?
2003 - Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Notebook Intel Celeron 1.86 ghz processor 512MB RAM, 40gb hard drive 128mb Integrated graphics 17' screen, "£800". (about $1200 with how week the £ is now!)
worked full time over a summer and saved up for it. lasted me 5 years before the sound became horrible and I sold it to me ex for £50. I put it up for a gig ram for her but it didn't work, needed an external sound card but that was up to her. Was a nice PC for when I was at uni!
