christmas decorations

I noticed for a month now most stores have their christmas decorations out now in addition to their christmas inventory.

What about you, when are you going to put your christmas treee and other decorations out?

Re: christmas decorations

Dont do tree, not since the tragic incident of 99 when my cat decided eating a plastic tree was clever and fun.
Died two days later.
So now I just put up lights. Thousands and thousands of lights.
I'll post pics when I dig them out.
Bah Humbug.

Re: christmas decorations

I don't do Christmas, I celebrate the Midwinter solstice (the REAL new year :wink) instead.

Re: christmas decorations

I went off of Xmas celebrations when I found out my wife wanted to do everything HER WAY ...

When the kids were small and my eldest daughter didn't even know what Xmas was, let alone her 8th December date of birth .. the decorations were up in time for the birthday celebrations. However as time went by and my wife became more and more engrossed with doing things her way .. I just left her to it .. Xmas was just one more of those things that egoists do to make people clap them on the back and say well done ..

Presents in my wifes eyes were not toys but clothes .. must make the kids look nice regardless of the fact that toys are educational and a prime requirement for raising a normal human being .. just something else that my kids were deprived of so that the egoist in her could have everyone standing around applauding the way she was bringing up the children .. because they were dressed nicely.

Then we have the commercialism of the festivities .. something that turns me off completely .. don't get me wrong .. I love the old carols , the lights and the singers , the idea of everyone getting together and being happy .. however when we see the overpriced plastic ornaments that were not manufactured to last more than one Xmas and of course next year we MUST have something different ..

It came to the point a few years ago that I volunteered to go abroad for Xmas rather than stay at home .. the tree wasn't even up by christmas eve (a situation that has slowly worsened year by year as "her indoors" has allowed other things to gain priority rather than prioritise with what is going on inside the home), the kids were grown and two had left home .. my son put up the tree alone ..

Nope .. not interested in Xmas, at least in my current environment! I am looking for a family thing where everyone plays a part and we all have a part to play

Shame I missed out on so many Xmases at my parents house, where everyone gathered around Xmas eve and or Xmas day for food drink and a good get together. Friends, relatives and immediate family.
Midnight Mass for those of us who were catholic .. and I assume the others went to their own services in their own churches since I come from a family where my Mum is a converted Catholic but both sides of the Family got along really well.

Xmas is just another day for me .. like my birthday or like a bank holiday .. so I suppose I'd better go get out my Humbug sign like Scrooge .. except that I really would love to celebrate in true fashion .. without the "dictator" telling me how to enjoy myself

Re: christmas decorations

Its only the beginning of november and its amazing how things are soo christmassy. Personally, decorations up anytime before 1st December is a joke and people have something seriously wrong with them.

Re: christmas decorations

when I was growing up, christmas decorations did not start until christmas eve for my family. My parents would spend the night putting up the xmas tree so santa could put the presents under the tree.

IMO, anytime before thanksgiving is too early. In the past it was the middle of December. I guess society is slowing changing my mindset.

I had not put up a tree in years though last year was the first time in years I put a wreath up outside. This year I may put other stuff outside but...as far as a tree for the inside, I doubt it but I may change my mind.

Re: christmas decorations

Yes, I too would rather ignore Xmas. The whole family works hospitality so wer'e all usually working and it marks the start of the busiest 2 weeks of the year. We look forward to it like you look forward to an ulcer.
My wife however, bless her heart, manages to instil some Xmas spirit in us and takes care of the decorations, requisitioning help from whoever she can catch.
Oh yeah....nowadays it's all about the lights!

Re: christmas decorations

We won't put anything up until about 10 days before Christmas. I agree with Chris - anything before that is just so tacky...

Re: christmas decorations

I put up a few strings of LEDs rather than the big fire, much safer for the little ones who invariably visit. At least I get some time off work (sort of). That's all I'm doing this year, the whole "let's kill a tree for fun" thing just doesn't do it for me.

Re: christmas decorations

Well I'm a Hindu so I don't celebrate Christmas, but we had Diwali a week ago with lots of lights and fireworks. People burn so many fireworks in the houses and the streets that there's smoke everywhere and it sometimes becomes hard to see outside. The temperature also rises by a few degrees.

Re: christmas decorations

LOL every year my husbands mom calls at Thanksgiving and mentions she has her tree up. The day after Halloween, I took our little polyoptic tree out of the box and placed it on the dining table and told Harold to call his mom and ask her if she has her tree up yet. ROFLMAO............swooped her this time.
