where are you all from?
the internet's a worldwide thing, so i'm thinking we can get to know the people who use it better through the different places we all live in. just give a description on some highlights of your area, and some interesting/unusual stuff (ok, i admit that i'm doing this to satisfy my own curiosity :). like: i live in surrey, BC, it's a city about 15 miles south of Vancouver, and the largest city in BC by physical size, and the second largest by population. used to be known as the car theft capital of north america. actually, a quite nice place, and near my house is a huge park about 10 blocks long and 4 blocks wide with a free outdoor pool in the summer. very quiet and quite peaceful, except for the occasional murder, shooting, robbery, and gang war.
now i'd like to hear from you

If you must.
Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia. (Possibly moving at the end of the year to Brisbane). It's mainly a tourist destination cause it's basically on the beach and Fraser Island is fairly close. Populations around 50k at the moment (and increasing rapidly). It's a general idea that it mainly consists of retired people but I don't think that's true any more. Don't know what else to add. (Was going to attach a google earth pin thing of my house but decided against it , I'll post a screenshot of it instead) Image One - General location. ![]() Image Two - 'Neighbourhood'

Re: where are you all from?
I live in Glasgow, Scotland.
![]() A city of over half a million, spread out along the banks of the River Clyde. I stay in one of the posh areas - known as the South Side. Basically it's a nice suburb, about 6 or 7 miles from the city centre. It's higher than the city so I look out over the whole Clyde Valley and can see all the way up to Ben Lomond (on a clear day). Glasgow has more parks per head of population than almost any other city, although I prefer the privacy of my own garden.

I live in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Its population is over 500,000 and its located around 50 miles East of Glasgow. It has loads of historic landmarks such as Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh dungeons etc. The Weather is never really great, however with it being a large city there are lots of Cinema's, Swimming pools and other activities. Oh, and i also live about 20minutes ( driving ) from the Sea. Edinburgh Castle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_Castle Forth Rail bridge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forth_Bridge_(railway) ( about 15minutes north of me ) |

Ephrata, Pennsylvania, USA - The heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
Weather here is usually pretty nice. We do get great storms once in a while, but it's not a regular thing. Traffic's not usually too bad either - unless you get behind a buggy or a house. Yes that's house not horse. There are several major manufactured housing companies, from trailer park stuff the homes you can't tell were pre-built once they're set up. Most of them are double wides, so it's not unusual to see half a house heading down the road at 20mph on a flat bed truck. And they're so wide that even if they pull onto the shoulder, you can't go 'round them unless you're in a really tiny car.

Re: where are you all from?
Originally from my mum's tum in Co Durham, UK. Then Yorkshire & London. Lived in the Trucial Oman States (now UAE) and New Zealand for many years. Would love to move to WA, Australia but her indoors doesn't like snakes & spiders... I love 'em (I'm a registered snake catcher with USGS, San Diego but thats another story for another time)
Currently existing at the end of a cul-de-sac (no exit road) in the small quiet village of Odcombe, about 8k to the west of Yeovil. I have some (about 6) photos of the area on Google Earth (Fly to Yeovil, UK) to see them. I am in the process of putting the Odcombe village photographically on the map on Google earth. All the local photos submitted have been accepted for inclusion but will take a month before they actually appears on GE. Anyone interested can see the photos now at: Panoramio - Google Earth

Re: where are you all from?
I'm originally from Birmingham, the UK's second largest city. It's got more miles of canals than Venice. Home to Cadburys chocolate - I lived on land that was owned by the Cadbury family, not sure if it still is. On their land as they were Quakers there were no pubs or Off Licences allowed. Used to live not far from Longbridge when it was Austin cars they made. It then became British Leyland and then Rover but I don't think they make cars there any more.

Re: where are you all from?
Originally from a village called 'Settle' in the N Yorkshire Dales, I'm now stuck in Deptford, SE London (pop. unknown cos of illegal immigrants
). It's right next to Greenwich (home of the Royal Observatory and the Meridian Line) and Blackheath (haunt of Dick Turpin the infamous highwayman and the burial-site for the victims of 'The Plague')There's a lot of history to Deptford, the 'Golden Hind' was built on the Thames, approx 150 ft from my flat, and Czar Peter of Russia stayed here while his Armada was being built at the Royal Navy Dockyards. Samuel Pepys, the famous London Diarist lived here (the estate where I live was once part of his garden ), along with Grinling Gibbons, the famous wood-carver extraordinaire.

I currently reside in San Antonio, Texas, USA. We are the fattest city in the US and Texas ranks #14 in the world for gross domestic products. It's hot. Very hot.

Re: where are you all from?
I originally come from Woodley, a town close to Reading: which is a commuter town for London.
Reading is known for its rock festival (although it moved on from 'rock' years ago). Woodley used to have a 2nd World War airfield, and is where Douglas Bader had his crash. In my childhood the airfield was deserted land, and fun to play in with its air raid bunkers. However, now the airfield has been swallowed up by house upon house upon house. Houses are expensive in the Reading area, and that is one of the reasons I now live up north in Sheffield. If you look at a map of Britain, Sheffield is more or less half way up; but Scotland takes up more than its share of land, and so we tend to ignore it and call Sheffield "up north" Sheffield was a centre for steel, but was hit hard in the 80's and became a bit of a broken city. This is brilliantly reflected in the film "The Full Monty". But since I came here it has become a vibrant city (in spite of me ). I suspect that the 2 universities here are the main local industry, although I have heard it said that Sheffield makes more steel now than it ever did (it just doesn't need many people to do it).Sheffield has a lot of hills, and so you have many opportunities to look over the city and see how many parks it has; for an old industrial place it has much greenery. We are also one of the few places in the UK to be allowed a tram system. |

Re: where are you all from?
Doncaster South Yorkshire, i think its claim to fame has always been the racecourse but more recently there has been a lot of development here including the new rail interchange which supposedly makes Doncaster the main link from the north of England to the channel tunnel. They have been trying to get city status and if that is dependant on population i think we should get it soon due to the alarming increase in the number of immigrants (Polish in particular???????)
I live in Scawthorpe, a suburb around 2 and 1/2 miles from town centre so not too close but i can get there in 5 minutes if i want to.

Re: where are you all from?
i went to portland once, just last spring break. the saturday market was great. i only stayed for about half a day, though. I went to texas when i was 9 yrs old, was too young back then to notice the obesity (or maybe it wasn't as bad?).
we use that term here too, but not sure about the U.S. we're officially the "city of parks", but recently a lot of development has taken place. being around 20x18 miles and only having 400000 people, there's a lot of empty space which only recently are being filled. Still tons of farms in the Cloverdale area, the annual Cloverdale rodeo is held there. Surrey's right by the U.S. border, so getting south is easy if it isn't for the long border wait times. when we went to oregon we waited over 5 hours at the crossing

Re: where are you all from?
Greetings,
As you'll see from the Avatar, I'm from "Paradise"...Australia... 'The Land Down Under', or 'The Land of Oz'. To be specific, I live in Adelaide, South Australia. Adelaide, is a city with a population of about 1½million people, with a few notable ones; such as, Dr. Andy Thomas - The only Australian NASA Astronaut; Sir Howard Florey, noted Nobel Prize winner, to name a few. Adelaide is the driest city; in the driest State; on the driest Continent on Earth...at the moment we are experiencing very strict water restrictions, even though its the middle of Winter! Some parts of this country have not seen Rain for over 14 months; apart from that, Australia is a great place to live. Kind Regards,
