Intel Does It Again?

Quote:
We've been told to expect a 20 - 30% overall advantage over Penryn and it looks like Intel is on track to delivering just that in Q4. At 2.66GHz, Nehalem is already faster than the fastest 3.2GHz Penryns on the market today. At 3.2GHz, I'd feel comfortable calling it baby Skulltrail in all but the most heavily threaded benchmarks. This thing is fast and this is on a very early platform, keep in mind that Nehalem doesn't launch until Q4 of this year.

it'll probably fill up a whole room, just like those primitive 50's and 60's computers.

Hopefully, it will be powerful enough to run MS Vista with all the bells, whistles and eye-candy enabled

Agreed. I bet even Blue Gene can't do it.

Re: Intel Does It Again?

I was under the assumption that Blue Gene was a successor to Deep Blue, and therefore superior.

And of course it can't run all the Vista stuff, sinclair made no mention of a motherboard or video card.

Re: Intel Does It Again?

It won't matter which vid card Apple uses, but they make their own mobos, so what ever they put in it, it will fit on my desk at home taking up no more room than my current desktop, and it'll run the next 6 versions of the Apple OS flawlessly. That is the value of Macs, and why I like them so much. Here is how my Mac started. I have maxed the RAM, upgraded the CPU and GPU, put a 16x DVD-RW in it, got almost 1TB of hard drive space from a RAID, and added a USB 2.0 card to it (see My System for the specs) and it's running the current Mac OS like a champ. The only time it shows it's age is when I start doing some really heavy video editing and converting work. My PC on the other hand, I built Christmas of '04, and it can't run Vista worth beans, and isn't even running XP now either (it's got some errors I have to figure out).

Re: Intel Does It Again?

oh, they have problems all right. it's just that apple does a much better job at hiding them. just kidding, of course, but i seriously can't imagine what'll happen with a mac if you get an error. it probably won't let you tweak any internal components to fix it, even if you DO know what you're doing. the only thing you can probably do is to take it back to the store. seriously, i just can't think of macs being tweaked and optimized and customized like PC's do, unless you hack the OS or something. not saying that's a bad thing; just something that needs to be considered when purchasing, especially for power users.

Re: Intel Does It Again?

It is just marketing hype. Desktop has nothing till Q3 '09, major delays and problems, high chip production costs added to very poor yields and high end consumer costs. Highest performance, most expensive, most overclockable and most eP chips are the only ones to come Q1 '09. They also have high power/temperatures than they should.

Secondly, they failed to run games and only ran the applications which were Nehalem and multi-core optimized. Obviously we all know most applications are only 2-core utilizing and optimized. So in reality, they portrayed a boasted showing of an unreleased sample product under Intel supervision and direction, to create early interest and hype. I'll wait till something can get out of production first and test myself to see how it performs.

Nehalem is a server market production and that is where it will release by Q1 '09.
