excellent article. However, i think it may have overemphasized the part about letting your kid go into danger. it does depend on each individual person, I think. and you certainly don't want them to be playing on a highway! the comments have some great suggestions too.

He said to teach them how to avoid danger - this includes teaching them not to play in the middle of the highway.
I agree with the article totally. While I might move the privelege age up a couple years from when I was a kid in the 60's, that's only because there are a few more things kids need to learn about than we had then. And YES, I did let my kids ride public transit, ride several miles on their bikes, walk to the store alone, and often didn't see them from lunch time to supper time on a saturday. AND this was in Philadelphia, PA, USA

Re: Quit Coddling Your Kids
I'm in complete agreement. When I was a kid I walked to and from school (up-hill both ways believe it or not!), was rarely seen around the house during the weekend, and would venture miles and miles from home in the pursuit of fun.

Re: Quit Coddling Your Kids
so your house was constantly rising? or maybe the school is quickly sinking? my parents rarely let me go anywhere by myself, saying that I needed to study more. Now, with all the drug dealers, bullies, etc, I doubt I'll ever let my future kids venture out too far either.

Re: Quit Coddling Your Kids
Nope, there was a hill between me and the school. I'd walk up one side going, and up the other returning.

Re: Quit Coddling Your Kids
as a parent myself with an 18 month old boy, and as 21 year old man with parents who criticise any slightly risky or slightly dangerous thing I do, I absolutely agree with everything in this article and will definately be taking it on board for when my son gets older!

Re: Quit Coddling Your Kids
One thing my girlfriend and I don't quite agree on is the issue of car seats for children. I say that carseats should be used until a certian age or height. She says that you only need a seat for babies and infants, but after that they can sit in a car without anything beyond the built-in restraints. I'd rather my child be in a device that'll protect them in the evnt of an accident. Drivers in San Antonio SUCK and I'd hate to lose my child by being careless or irresponsible. Other than that I'd let them live a life like I did and enjoy every minute.

![]() BTW, i totally agree with the article, if, for instance, you don't teach your kid how to cook, how will they know what to do in the big, wide, horrible world.
