Re: MS plans to close out "XP"

I heard that too! Bad for builders but most companies like dell and others will offer a choice for awhile longer on what OS you want in your PC but how long will that last?

Re: MS plans to close out "XP"

Not long. As soon as Vista came out we stopped making XP machines. Then it was a race to the store in hopes a XP was still available.

Re: MS plans to close out "XP"

Just because WinXP is being replaced, that doesn't mean you HAVE to have it. I'm sticking with my XP Pro, at least until the new 'Win 7' comes out. I'll see what that's like before I consider downgrading my XP. The web's grapevine suggests XP support could extend to 2012 or even 2014.

I'm wondering though, will MS supply a patch to remove the Windows Activation, when support does finally end??? Anyone having to re-install their OS will only have it for 30 days before the activation nag kicks in

Re: MS plans to close out "XP"

M$ needs to take a look at how Apple creates their new OS's. You know it is funny when you upgrade an apple to the latest OS an actually get a performance increase. That is not so true with Leopard as it was with previous versions but it is a true fact. Every time you upgrade a Windows box you might want to upgrade CPU, Memory, Video just to keep the OS running properly.

I had a 500mhz 15" Apple Power book that ran OS X 10.4 Latest OS at the time. I bet you can't even get XP to run on hardware that old.

I currently have a 1.2ghz 12" Power book that runs OS X 10.5 (The latest version of OS X) The new OS runs fine a quite peppy.

Re: MS plans to close out "XP"

I haven't seen WinXP running on older hardware, but I have seen it crawling on an Intel 233Mhz + 512Mb RAM PC. I can't remember what the vid. card was, but that seemed to be about the fastest part of the kit

Re: MS plans to close out "XP"

I've seen XP run on 233Mhz with 128mb ram with I believe 1mb graphic card.

Crawled along slower than an inchworm - took about 10 seconds to open the start menu, and then another 20 to load everything in it.

Is it slower than the 867mhz?

Re: MS plans to close out "XP"

yeah Leopard wants 867mhz or above and at least 512mb ram. My buddy had a PPC 400mgz quicksilver tower running 10.4 Tiger. When he found out he couldn't install Leopard on it he went and bought a Mac Mini.

Pretty much the same reason I have a 1.5ghz now instead of my 500mhz Powerbook.

Re: MS plans to close out "XP"

I bought the Mac just to relearn it. I rarely use it for anything besides holding the table down in the living room.

Re: MS plans to close out "XP"

up until recently, I worked at a decommisioning centre. We used to get loads of old Compaq Deskpro's that were 233 with 128mb ram. Not surprisingly, they were scrapped straight away! The thing that made me laugh was that these PC's were at leasr 15 years old and still being used in offices of major banks!

Re: MS plans to close out "XP"

There's still quite a few 'mid-size' and successful business that use DOS 6.2!!! They had their bespoke software written for them, years ago and either don't need to upgrade - or can't.
