Re: Accidental 35-cent gas drives throngs to station
I'd like to know who wrote the software for this multi-Billion Dollar company that allowed a zero in the dollar field. This has been standard in most programs of this type since the early 1980's.
Maybe they don't have "Windows Updates" turned on!

Re: Accidental 35-cent gas drives throngs to station
gas prices did get below a dollar a couple of times since the 80's so the zero was necessary. At one time they were talking about selling by the liter like most other countries so it still may be needed though way the prices are going up, maybe not.

Yes - the sale of a liter of gasoline was talked about in the 1970's when they tried to force the metric system down our throats here in the USA - but it failed miserably. One of the lasting items in the US consumer market still sold in liters is the 2 liter (67.6 ounces) bottle of soda - which Coke and Pepsi wish would go away as they would like to bring the 1/2 gallon (64 ounces) bottle back into fashion - to save 3.6 ounces per bottle - but keep the appearance of the 2 liter bottle. Personally, I don't ever see the US converting fully to the metric system - at least not for the public at large. We don't need to follow the system(s) of others. However, with the E.U. now as a formidable consolidated economic opponent. . .

In early 2002 I was paying $0.89/gal here in San Antonio.

Re: Accidental 35-cent gas drives throngs to station
I did not know that - wow.. 89¢, huh? Was that for 82 octane or did you have a $1/per gallon coupon? (!!) I guess that maybe here in New Jersey - we (& Oregon I think) still have mandatory FULL SERVICE (no self-serv - it's illegal). Also, California, where I spend a lot of time, has emission additives that I assume drive the price up as well.

Re: Accidental 35-cent gas drives throngs to station
Nope, 87 octane. 93 is sold as "Premium" here. No coupons or discounts. I had held on the receipt where I bought 10 gallons and paid a scant $8.90 for it. There are also a number of closed gas stations where the boards still read $1.41/gal.

Re: Accidental 35-cent gas drives throngs to station
Yeah... 93 octane is what I look for generally - at least for 2 of my cars in particular - one is a 325 hp 32-valve V8 (stock was 275hp) and the other is a little faster... a 517 hp V12. I do believe that the New Jersey State Troopers have my vehicle descriptions, but would have trouble catching up to me at triple-digit speeds. But after driving through Montana when there was no daytime speed limit and also the Mojave desert - and the Continental Divide it becomes difficult to do 65mph - or 55 in North New Jersey. Then there are the Autobahnen in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. . . 200+ mph easily done in the right vehicle... WOW! Many stations here (New Jersey) and in California try to pass 92 octane off as "Super Unleaded" - and also 91 octane as well.

Re: Accidental 35-cent gas drives throngs to station
My engine likes high-octane but I refuse to shell out for it. It operates just fine with regular 87....

Don't you experience any engine knocking or pinging when using 87 instead of 93 octane fuel? Is there any danger (long-term) in using 87 when the manufacturer's specs call for 92/93 octane fuel? I ask as I remember a 1985 Pontiac Grand Prix that I had during college. I bought it with a V6 believing it would save gas. Big mistake. There was so much engine pinging noise - the answer was super-unleaded. I traded it in within 6 months for a 1986 Grand Prix SJ with a V8 - that ran fine on regular-unleaded. No noise whatsoever. But the 4bbl carb did eat gas - literally. Years later when the Cadillac Northstar and Lincoln In-Tech 32V V8 came out the dash actually read "Premium Unleaded Only". Now, I find the Mercedes V12 runs fine on 87 (when I don't want to pay $4.06⁹/gallon in Southern California or $3.51⁹ in NJ/PA) - but I am told this is "hurting" the engine. I don't know anything about automobile mechanics at all - I've never even changed the oil in a car - not that I don't want to - I just don't know how - to be honest. I have changed anti-freeze and just the other day I put new wiper blades on (that took about 45 min!) I seem to lack patience in general when using my hands to do something. I am good at taking things apart, though! So, am I "hurting" the engine if I use 87 octane fuel all the time? Thank you. . . jcgriff2
