When I was about 8 or 9, scrumping was the thing we used to do. (Scrumping, was raiding orchards & pinching a few apples or pears.)

One day we climbed a wall into one orchard and I climbed a tree. I sat there munching a juicy pear when I was caught red handed by the owner. He took me and my two pals into his house. We expecting to be carted away by the police and jailed for theft. (Thats how young kids thought in those days)

Instead, he gave each one of us a bag of fruit to take home with us and invited us to go back the next day and help pick the fruit. We did, & as reward for our labours, he gave each of us a box of fruit.

From that day onward, he didn't realise it, he had 3 protectors who patrolled the area warning off any prospective scrumper! Never again did we raid his orchard.

I have often thought of that guy and how it made such an impression on me. In later life, I have had the opportunity to emulate his kindness a couple of times.
