Re: Resume Question

There are a few things i think you should put as well

Your biodata; name, address, email, contact number.

Your present salary and expected salary and maybe the history of your salary according to your past job.

Re: Resume Question

First of all, I would not put the present salary in a resume. This needs to be discussed if you get an interview. If you know what this new company pays and your company pays less, then they will think you are more interested in the money (which we all are) than you are in working for their company. Don't make it appear that this is your one and only interest.

Second, be sure you have the most recent references or someone from the company you presently represent. You might be wise to include supervisors from at least two recent companies. Also, never put someone in as a reference until you ask them if you can use their name. You may have done that, but be sure you do.

If you know or can find out who does the hiring at the new place, then I suggest that you send this letter and resume directly to him/her or whomever makes that decision. Use their name and just not the name of the company in the heading.

Under the Education heading, here is what you have:

Quote:

1998 C1 Professional Driving School, Indianapolis, In. 4 week course.

This would be better if it said:

1998 Graduate of C1 Professional Driving School, Indianapolis, IN

1984 - 1986 Criminal Justice
Memphis State University, Memphis, Tn. Did not finish.

1984 - 1986 Attended Criminal Justice School at Memphis State University.
These are just a few of the things I see that I would suggest you consider.

Re: Resume Question

TY Tumbleweed, Yes I did check w/my references first. As to whom receives said resume, it will be submitted on line through their website and gave no such contact (still looking into that however), as for the above suggested changes, I agree that looks much better, I was worried about my college "did not finish", while honest, did not look right.

Re: Resume Question

Fuuny, I just updated my resume today, so I have resume-itis going on right now.

Here's a few thots:

The cover letter is extremely important. It's where the prospective employer gets his/her first impression of you. Believe it or not, oftentimes they just glance at the next pages. So be sure to offer just enough information to get you the interview. I agree with Tumbleweed, find out who will be making the decision about hiring you, address it and mail it to them. Be sure to put the Date, Company name, address, city state, then address it to Dear Mr. Pickme:

I like the editing by Tumbleweed on your education, almost exactly how I would have reworded it. And don't put your salary requirements on your resume. If they ask you to fill out an application, they may ask you there. But never offer that information right up front. First they want to know what skills and abilities you have, what your practical experience is and your longevity at your previous jobs, (although that's not as important as it once was!)

Did you win any awards or recognition (safety awards, even "employee of the month" type, etc). Put that down, it shows that you strive for excellence.

Also, I would change the layout into something a little more formal if you are printing and mailing it. There are probably sites online that can give you examples. Dress it up a bit!

Lastly, don't forget to do a little research on the company so that you are knowledgeable and informed about their mission and practices when (notice I said when!) you get the interview. Prospective employers will be more interested in a person if they can show they've done their homework!

Go get 'em, tiger!

Re: Resume Question

I really appreciate all the info guys, and gal. Since getting into a truck, a resume seemed to be a thing of the past. I have a lot of background that will go far in this position but can't just splash it onto a one page rundown. I guess that can come out in the interview, that I am positive I will get,(also have some inside help!) Thanks too all, I will submit it as you all have helped so much. Continue with the comments as I wish to keep a resume on hand should this also open future doors. 10 years ago I never dreamed that I would drive a truck, make good money and utilize a security clearance all at once! 41 and still leaning and growing in so many ways!

Re: Resume Question

After many years of driving trucks in Australia i find that most employers will want to know what types of trucks you have driven (eighteen wheelers, low loaders, etc) also if you have a good driving record,

Re: Resume Question

Thanks, I had to resubmit per their peramiters online. I will however continue to adjust my resume, I plan to hand carry a copy to the interveiw to be added to my file for a quick refernce by their HR. Looks much better printed out vs. the text based layout they have on file.

Re: Resume Question

I know it's late and I'm not sure if this has been said already, but you should elaborate in your covering letter. As well as saying you have skills, say what skills you have and where/how you got them. Highlight specific skills that are extremely useful for them such as punctuality and reliability.

Re: Resume Question

Greetings. . .

I agree with all said above. I would add that you may want to expand on your military service in Desert Storm, if permitted to do so. I have always given preferential treatment to Veterans for obvious reasons and I believe that it should be made more noticeable and thus important. I would also include discharge status as I looked for either an "honorable" or "general" discharge status.

Finally, think about the overall appearance - choose a conservative font. Having read thousands of resumιs in my time, the ones that differed in appearance usually warranted a second glance - sometimes to just figure out why it was different - but that's the point - it caught my eye for whatever period of additional time.

Good Luck ! !

JC
