Re: Getting Gouged by Geeks

I think the biggest issue is a lot of those guys don't know what they are doing, they are hired for the wrong reasons. Because the guys who do know what they are doing have advanced above that level.

Also 2nd opinions are critical at the shop i'm at now I was working on a PC and it was a real pain to figure out what the issue was. Well I had my co-worker look at it, he had a simliar issue guessed and got it right.

Or today we had a issue with a RAM upgrade, user had 3 ram slots two were filled with 512 MB and user wanted an additional 1 GIG stick.

MY co-worker was first to work on it, he was stumped he knew all 3 sticks were good, even all 3 slots were good, but when ram was plugged it where 512 in slot 1, 512 in slot 2, and 1 gig in slot 3 PC would not boot.

I came in, i've seen the problem before even had it explained has somethign to do with how the MOBO addressing the ram and it gets confused or something like that when addressing the ram because of how it goes from 512 to 1 gig, it only occurs on some MOBOs from what i've seen. SO I tossed 1 gig in the middle slot, booted it up it worked.

Moral of the stories, bring the PC Into a shop. Their it will most likely be looked at by 2-3 techicians if your lucky and one may see something the other didn't see.

But nerds are us or something are complete idiots i'm sorry that man is a utter moron. 2,000 dollars? Sure thats the cost of recovery of data but the HDD isn't abd.

And ram does get burnt out, in fact if you consider barebone computer parts I find ram, and GPU tend to burn out the fastes.

Re: Getting Gouged by Geeks

I can see the problems with these technicians that get called in, It is rare to find one that has alot of knowledge in most areas.

One might be very good with Hardware and Networking, and know very little about other things. Another Tech might be a wiz with MS and Linux products, but doesnt know things about hardware.

Re: Getting Gouged by Geeks

These guys (some of them) know perfectly well, what they're doing. They are just earning money. That's business! And the head of the company, that is saying about "wake up call" is not very sincere, I believe
