Look at them apples! (Wide Photo)

Think different

Students are encouraged to acquire wireless laptop technology from Apple, which the School has designated as its preferred provider, but students also will have a choice of a Windows-based alternative.
Last year, 99.5 percent of incoming students chose the Apple option.

Schools don't usually have OS requirements or restrictions, only recommendations.

Haha! Apple ought to like that school a lot! Their thing about it being about viruses was slightly funny though... if that's the only reason, it's not that great... Anyone smart enough to go to a university should have the brains to know how to avoid getting a virus. I've never gotten one... Or maybe it's something that a lot of college students are downloading... The cost of software bit was also interesting... You don't have to buy any software with a mac??!!!

How many laptops you can see in this amphi ?

let say 200 X 1200$ = 240 000$
A quarter million dollar of laptops in one classroom .
Now multiply how many amphitheatres in that same college , and how many colleges and universities in the whole country .
Thats a bunch of money for Apple

With that many laptop sales, Apple should give substantial discounts.

Do Apples get worms, just wondering?

Q. What if I prefer a Windows-based machine?
A. That's an option, but it's one we do not recommend unless you plan to make a career of computer-assisted reporting. By the time you purchase photo, audio and video software for a PC, you probably will have spent more than you would if buying a comparable Apple Computer. Buy a PC if you prefer to do so, but make sure it is wireless and has Microsoft Office. Almost 100 percent of last year's freshmen chose Apple computers.
Obviously this school has never heard of Open-Source. I'd insist on bringing my Windows-based laptops because it's an OS I know and hardware I can work with easily.

Re: Look at them apples! (Wide Photo)

My main question with regard to their software cost proposition was how they thought you didn't have to buy such software on a Mac as well. How does third party software factor in as an additional cost with a PC and not a Mac?

There's a very good possibility to run windows on Macs using third-party software (I will not name it in this thread) or via Boot Camp which is actually an Aplle app.
