Banks delay smaller checks and cash the biggest ones first, regardless of date. That way, if you have an overdraft they'll make more in overdraft fees with all the smaller checks

That's been going on for years. It's not a problem if you keep an eye on things online and transfer in from savings to cover the projected overdraft while it's still pending. Banks credit deposits first. (if your bank doesn't credit deposits first, switch to another bank)
