Mr. Dingell Proposes Raising Your Taxes

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,298271,00.html

Mr. Dingell wants to raise gas taxes by 50 cents, on top of current taxes, as well as impose other measures such as a gradual elimination of the interest tax deduction on home mortgages (for those homes over 3,000 sq ft.) and a tax on carbon.

These taxes are supposed to fight 'global warming', but the revenues go nowhere near projects designed to help: only funding of public transportation is relevant.

"Some of the revenue would be used to reduce payroll taxes, but most would go elsewhere including for highway construction, mass transit, paying for Social Security and health programs and to help the poor pay energy bills."

The taxes are supposed to drive down the use of cars, large homes, etc... But for most people, cars are practically required. Public transportation is not always a suitable option - neither is walking. Driving less is only possible by cutting out non-essential activities that involve driving. Gas already costs too much - I have to pay $45 a tank and fill up every 2 weeks or so, and I drive a little 4 cyl engined car... But I can't afford to give up my car either.

And believe it or not, I doubt making purchasing homes more expensive is what the economy needs right now... The housing market is already pretty bad.

The tax on carbon would just be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices... Or cheaper quality goods if prices are at their limit already.

Yay for anti-economic minded people! MMMM taxes.

Order things via UPS and you don't need to use your vehicle. ;)

Some people do a novel thing called work. Many of whom don't work within walking distance of their home

And no, taking the bus is not always an option. Buses typically don't service the suburbs or private neighborhoods. Where I live, for example, there isn't a bus stop within 15 miles.

Re: Mr. Dingell Proposes Raising Your Taxes

Where I live, there are several bus stops. However, if I want to get to downtown San Jose, I have to go in an extremely roundabout detour. IN the end, I go south of dtSJ, around to the east (I live on the west side), through the 'slums' and then back towards the west to downtown SJ.
