The Pirates Fight Back
And the media companies don't like it.
Ok first of lets review what has happened in the past week to Mediadefender, an organzation which specilies in catching and stopping priates. 1. 700 MB of internal e-mails leaked 2. A 25 min phone call with the attonery general about the leak 3. Their source code for the program they use to disrupt P2P networks. Now Heres a few articles. http://www.dailytech.com/War+Hackers...rticle8990.htm http://www.dailytech.com/Massive+Ema...rticle8900.htm Heres also a few kicks in the balls. 1. Priate bay is sueing media companies which worked with Media Defender to disrupt their networks they filled crimila charges aganist them. 2. Those recent leaks have insipried the development of MiiVi 2, Miivi Expect this time it won't be the anti-priate orgs running it, all the major priating communities are going get together and develop it. I would also suggest going through some of the reponses to the cease and desit letters which MD has sent out. O BTW more releases on MD content is going to be relieazed at least thats what the hacker is saying. I just am loving this :) Last edited by koala; 09-22-2007 at 05:37 AM. Re: The Pirates Fight Back
After reading some of the emails, I find that it's amazing that that the employees at MD even get paid for the amount of time they waste.

Re: The Pirates Fight Back
I agree, its like software companies that make software to help priates out then complain that their software is priated.
Making tools for priates to priate easier is just going get your stuff pirated get used to it if you want to market to this grouop of poeple. |

Re: The Pirates Fight Back
It's probably a whole new thread, but ever noticed how the margins of law and order are different in cyberspace.
The average person wouldn't steal a car, but would probably be more likely to steal software. And you just don't get people going car to car, picking the locks, then leaving them for someone elce to have the possibility to steal. Incidently, there are good reasons that companies make lock picking equipment, and many are not illegal. But I bet a lock picking company has better than average locks on its door! As for the topic, again it would only happen in cyberspace: can you imagine someone in a shop dumping a whole load of new products outside the back door for people to steal. Or writing on the outside wall the alarm code. Employees actions must have consequences. |

Re: The Pirates Fight Back
You know if you go by the defination of stealing priating isn't stealing.
Like lets take for example vista, so this guy is using XP, he heres about Vista and wants it he knows of priating, so he figures hey its free why not? So he goes out and DLs it, then burns it and installs it boom done. Now is that stealing? Did M$ loss a penny because he did that? Nope, he never physically stole the media or anything that was worth to M$ sure M$ can predict that they lost 400 USD because of this act of privacy but whose to say he would of spent 400 if he'd of been given no other opputirnity. Its like in school, lets say we have to do HW, and the guy next to me copies it. Well he didn't steal it he merely copied it. Now lets say guy next to me takes my HW writes his name on it and turns it in as he own. Well that stealing because now I don't have my HW, he has it. |

Re: The Pirates Fight Back
Do we only stay legal because of consequences?
Its an interesting question. If I drive, I obey traffic lights; if I cycle then I treat them as advisory. I don't actually know why, but I guess it is because of my percieved risk of getting caught and percieved level of the consequences. Actually I heard a rhumor once that I can get points against my car licence for things I do while on my bicycle. But that is neither here nor there. If everyone were to disobey trafic lights (and this is becoming more widespread), there would be trafic chaos. Poor pedestrians would have no chance. Laws are, almost without exception, there for a reason. Here the reason is, as already said, to ensure that people get paid for their interlectual work. Does the pirate care? Well in the short term, it is probably nice not to pay for Vista. And since most new OS's from M$ appear to be beta tests, perhaps there is some merit to not paying. But if nobody paid then M$ would cease to exist, as would Vista. And although this may sound like eutopia, without M$ what would all the helpdesk people do all day? And with no helpdesk people, TSF would be a bit thin on the ground. So you suffer in the end!!! Also, If I pay for Vista and my next door neighbour doesn't; how is that fair? Am I the mug for paying? I want him to suffer consequences. What really puzzles me in all this is how freeware can work, and does very well. But that is way off topic. |

Re: The Pirates Fight Back
Freeware works for the same reason that TSF works. People do it for the satisfaction they get rather than financial remuneration.

Re: The Pirates Fight Back
For the same reason I guess. Because of the satisfaction they get out of being able to do it.

Re: The Pirates Fight Back
A lot of strong torrent sites went down within hours of each other recently. I'm starting to think that the MediaDefender leak was a decoy.
