Prison officers walk out in an illegal picket
Prisoner officers go back to work
Prison officers who went on a 24-hour strike at a jail in Dorset, joining thousands of colleagues around England and Wales, are to return to work. Only two of the 53 officers turned up for the morning shift and none for the evening shift at the Verne Prison. The Prison Officers Association (POA) called a 24-hour strike on Wednesday morning in a national pay dispute. The POA recommended its members go back to work after the government offered them fresh talks. The government, who said the protest over pay was unlawful, gained a High Court injunction on Wednesday afternoon, which ordered the striking officers to return to work. Most of our prisons were being run on "lockdown" systems, where all prisoners were locked in their cells for the duration of the strike action. Whilst what they were doing was technically "illegal" what do you lot think about this? Personally i think it was a perfectly worthwhile thing, showed people that if people are pushed into getting poor pay and conditions, not even the law will stop their protest. Good on them i say http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/dorset/6969629.stm

Re: Prison officers walk out in an illegal picket
I agree with wanting better conditions, and I speak from experience, there are some things you can't strike over, say doctors, and emergency services, I think the problem is that the people involved did not receive what they were promised, there has to be a better way for public sector workers

Re: Prison officers walk out in an illegal picket
yeah, i agree there has to be limitiations, like for example, the illegality for police officers to go on strike. But who was inconvenienced by this strike, lawbreakers, therefore i have no sympathy with some prisoner on the radio, complaining about being locked in his cell for 6 hours. Oh what a shame, must be terrible!!! If you commit the crime, you take what is given to you.

I always got a kick out of of those "your strike is illegal" type deals.
If I was on a strike for better wages, and I was told "you can't do that get back to work" I'd go, then pay me more. What are they going do? Fire and rehire a entire prisonstaff. I mean come on seriously. |

Re: Prison officers walk out in an illegal picket
Just seen this article on the bbc today http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/n...re/6975742.stm
This whole saga is starting to really smack of paying people to keep quiet, why last week they said that people who went in on the strike days and crossed picket lines would recieve somewhere in the region of £5-600. I am actually appalled at this goverments treatment of the strikers
