Japan's Warp-Speed Ride to Internet Future

TOKYO -- Americans invented the Internet, but the Japanese are running away with it.

Broadband service here is eight to 30 times as fast as in the United States -- and considerably cheaper. Japan has the world's fastest Internet connections, delivering more data at a lower cost than anywhere else, recent studies show.

So what else is new.

Even in major cities here they're crawling. I hope the next president does something about this.

Re: Japan's Warp-Speed Ride to Internet Future

The potential is there to have the same or even higher speeds than Japan. However they know if they keep it lower bandwidths, they can charge a whole lot more when they suddenly are able to get higher speeds, for a premium.

Re: Japan's Warp-Speed Ride to Internet Future

The US is 26 times larger than Japan, and has about 2 times as many people.... the difference in population density alone should tell you how much more difficult it is for the US to wire up its population with super high speed broadband. You can't just run fiber up to a high rise complex and have 5% of your population wired up all at once.

This isn't to say that Comcast et al. are doing a good job, quite the contrary, but you have to realize that dealing with the US is a whole nother ball of wax compared to a tiny island nation with a much higher population density.

Actually, if this were true, they wouldn't be in this boat. Comcast is starting to cut people off for actually using their service maxed out. In this age of things like the BBC online TV service, youtube, streaming video and bittorrent, comcast would be well served to roll out faster connections NOW. Unfortunately, they didn't plan ahead, and now they are paying for all the bandwidth overselling they did.

The population density in California and on the East coast should at least justify it.

I was interested to see the Uk figures in your chart Mimo. You might be interested to see my recent results from Speedtest. Eat your hearts out.

Re: Japan's Warp-Speed Ride to Internet Future

This is mine from Vanderbilt (Their own connection).

Second Test :P I think the cache helps or something... Gaining 11 Mbps between tests lol.

16 Mbps seems fast enough for me... I can't imagine 60+ Mbps being worth any significant increase in payments. (Then again, I don't download videos... The biggest files I regularly download are iTunes )

Re: Japan's Warp-Speed Ride to Internet Future

Very similar to mine, so it shows it can be done. The limiting factor as far as I can see is the upload speed. It doesn't matter how fast your download speed is if the server you're downloading from is only uploading at a slow speed.

This is odd:

http://www.speedtest.net/global.php?...t=4&country=78

Japan's fastest speed listing on SpeedTest.net is ~20 Mbps

That's no faster than I'm getting. Where do these 60M speeds come from?

Only in Japan Buddy !

look at this 2003 BBC article :

Quote:
According to the IEEE, you could get over 50Mbps, theoretically, if your loop is less than one kilometre. In Japan, NTT has put a fibre feeder point within a kilometre of 80% of locations
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3278375.stm

and that was back in 2003 lol

Re: Japan's Warp-Speed Ride to Internet Future

So why is Speedtest only showing speeds of 20M for Japan? Presumably those results are for users in Japan.

Re: Japan's Warp-Speed Ride to Internet Future

I don't know who is speedtest , but BBC journalists usually do a pretty good job at writing their articles .

Quote:
The average broadband download speed in the US is only 1.9 megabits per second, compared to 61 Mbps in Japan, 45 Mbps in South Korea, 18 Mbps in Sweden, 17 Mpbs in France, and 7 Mbps in Canada, according to the Communication Workers of America.

Re: Japan's Warp-Speed Ride to Internet Future

Speedtest as shown by Rousseau and myself is a way of checking your broadband speed.

EDIT: As for your comments about BBC jounalists, I have to agree.
