Re: Languages

I honestly don't know. Did the pastry danish come from there? Just thought about that for some reason...

Re: Languages

I don't think so. In Denmark and Sweden it's called Wienerbrød (Wienerbröd) = Vienna-bread.

Re: Languages

The new replacement languages for unification (to iron out more and more differences, as is always being done) may be somewhat computer orientated the way these things are developing... developing on a common base to all modern and future generations. Geek code based.

Welcome to virtual reality. First time I saw a hacker use the word PWNED I laughed at how strange that was, and which world he lived in. Now, that same world of thought has took over many households and online generation minds. Might be the English alphabet, but it 'aint English that's for sure.

Why do words sound good, bad, happy, mellow, terrorful, benign, pleasing, disheartening and so forth (emotive in phonetics), ever wondered? And this is different in every language, to which word and how it sounds, the tone setting the meaning, rather than the description setting the contextual meaning.

Such as the word "stupid" is a derogatory and harsh sounding word in the English language, while in another language its synonym is by no way sounding harsh, thus it's commonly accepted and spoken in all spheres. The word is "dalla" in Patwari, a sort of term of endearment and sweetness actually.

Tele-vision is from Greek meaning far-vision.

This opens all kinds of possibilities. How will the tech speak in use impact every day speech? In the same way as slang? Maybe to a greater extent seeing the world wide use of it. Look at the comericals now a days and their use of this. Will that influence this generation to literally start speaking that way? OMG! WTBD!

No, only when pronouncing foreign words/places like Wales. V and W used to be considered the same in the "Swedish" alphabet. The letter W was only used in silly "noble" names.

Re: Languages

If you want to see the effect of computer generation and thought on our lives, then look no further:
http://www.newscientist.com/blog/inv...-radiator.html
http://www.aesnet.org/Visitors/Annua...ct.cfm?id=7085

They are applying computing principles to a human brain to treat diseases. A cooling system for the brain as done with CPUs.

Every generation is always a stepping stone for the next, and what they do directly affects and lays the foundation for the next (unless with revolutionary changes). It's no secret, that we're laying the groundwork for the new generation of today and morrow. This, right here, beneath your fingers, and infront of your eyes.

What's the word for 'viking' in Swedish, Nicholas, and it's pronunciation?

Isn't 'and' pronounced 'o' in Swedish in regular speech cutting the 'ck' ending off?

Also the word 'tala' (missing the accents but elongated first vowel) is very similar in many Asian languages, meaning "to speak" in them.

Isn't kj and ki sometimes pronounced the same?

BTW "blood" for Swedes (blod I think) is still pronounced in the original Middle English it used to be pronounced in, as it is still written; blood (oo as in fool)

Ki is pronounced kj in kiosk (which is a Turkish word, I think ).

And "by", as in Grimsby, means village in Swedish (and other Nordic languages). Guess it's a remnant from the viking ravages.
Och (= and) is mostly pronounced "o" (or å).

@Kinbard: Borg means fortress or castle - but you knew that.

Re: Languages

Interesting.

Vikings did fight against England collaborating with Picts, Irish and Scots in 937 for a while - must have passed quite a few things on.

I imagined they passed quite a few things on world wide, seeing their conquest and all.

Re: Languages

America was called Vinland (Wineland) by the vikings ( Leif Ericsson). I wonder why. It can't have been because of the drink. Or???

Re: Languages

As far as I know they drank mjöd (a kind of beer) and possibly wine. They must have known about wine from their journeys. The Swedish landscape is full of carved stones telling about those travels in the Runic alphabet.
