I guess so. Someone must have taken it personal. I'm good with it all.

Re: Languages

I just realized, eneles. Earlier I said that I've not seen the migration of t to ch, but I have. Cherokee does it. tsulagi (there name for Cherokee) is pronounced with ch for ts. Not sure if both nations pronounce it that way, though.

Re: Languages

Cherokee is pronounced Scherokee in Swedish, but pay no notice to that. We can't understand the rules ourselves. We don't use ts-, except for in tsunami, but that word entered our language about three years ago after the disaster in Asia.

Re: Languages

Are there a lot of s and sch sounds in Swedish? Seems so.

Re: Languages

Is it a case driven language like Russian, or more like English?

Re: Languages

I mean, is sentence structure dependent on word order or word endings?

Re: Languages

It's word order - especially imperative.

Re: Languages

Please don't confuse me - grammar isn't exactly my speciality.
Swedish is more like English - and Danish is a lot like German. You would think that Swedes and Danes could (easily) understand each other - but no way! Not to mention Icelandic. Swedish and Norwegian are more related (I think).

Re: Languages

Can you explain to me the etimology of 'mushroom'?
What is 'mush' and how is it related to 'room' or is it just a case of homonymy?

Please forgive me if you are not joking, but this is funny. It is like ashumann12 parallel in the English thread with driveway/parkway. But it brings up an interesting point; how did this word evolve in the English language?

Re: Languages

I'm not going to tell you why some Western terms are extremely repugnant and also hilarious to many in non-English speaking regions. Such as what LAN means in around 9-10 Eastern languages...

It's a pejorative that you will never hear used but by the foulest ribald mouthed.

Ahhh, local society determines meaning, yet meaning bereft of understanding. The proverbial catch 22. Kalim, once again you throw the line to fish, but who will bite? Kudos to those who listen.

Re: Languages

Kinbard: Any idea how many known Native American languages there are, still surviving, known and discovered?

Time to get wowed.

And that's incomplete.

Re: Languages

I used that site on a speech I gave on language extinction. It is simply amazing the number on native languages there are/were. Pity so many are extinct without ever being documented.

Re: Languages

Many languages are (slowly) on their way towards extinction. Danish, for example, doesn't have its own words for computer, download, weekend, teenager etc, whereas Swedish (thankfully) has: dator, nedladdning, helg, tonåring.

Yeah, I've seen that with other words like television too. Luckily, I don't see a chance of any of the major groups dying out. The picture is sadder for the smaller groups
