Re: Languages

Kalim,
Here is a cherokee song sung on the trail of tears. It is from a cd by a cherokee elder (I can't remember his name off hand). On the cd he tells/sings traditional stories and songs of the eastern cherokee people. Let me know if you want more. I will have to listen to the cd and transcribe them. This is phonetic, so the way it is spelled is close to the way it is pronounced.

Sqa ti ne say
sti ye ho wa
el li ti ga
ee so ne
tsi wah nah ga
ti you ha gi
ga thli ni gi
ti ne he
ski sta li ski ski sta li ski
ni go hey lv
wa ti ta

Loose translation (words split to keep time):
Guide me
thou(you) great Jehovah
pilgrim in
in a barren land
I am weak
you are mighty
guide me with
your powerful hand
bread of heaven bread of heaven
feed me till
I want no more

Found something in Basque you would probably like kalim.

Gizon-emakume guztiak aske jaiotzen dira, duintasun eta eskubide berberak dituztela; eta ezaguera eta kontzientzia dutenez gero, elkarren artean senide legez jokatu beharra dute.

Re: Languages

Nice!

I've just been in Shinjang or anglecized as Xinjiang (Himalayan range), through the KKH and even to Urumqi. Met some traditional settlements and my mind is honestly befogged with the amount of cultural and linguistic variation I encountered. Some of them were Tibetan descended Muslims, other Hans, Mongolians, Uyghur, Kazakh Christians, Manchu, Hui, Kirghiz, Yamemta Buddhists, Xibe, Russian, Turk, Tatar .. .. it goes on and on. Even some from Kashgar, Tanda Pani, Baltistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Phenomenal! Elevates me to see such populations and variations.

Euskara phonetics are appearing eerily similar to an indigenous language spoken in South America's near the base of the Amazon. I don't accurately recall the Western name for it and there's only a village of around 70 speakers in total.

I've noticed this as well. It seems the Spainards were not the first to make a trip to the Americas. I also know what you mean about the sheer number of languages. The unfortunate thing is that many are being lost before they can at least be documented

I forgot to mention the delicious and innovative food they make.

And how they shared it all between themselves.

It was called "kheerl". Made of some sort of rice, yoghurt, egg white, some sweetner called 'shakkar' and a few other products I barely recognized.

Re: Languages

I speak German and English

Read and write English

No lingistic though only reason I know German is my mother raised me speaking it, never writing though.

I don't have the will power to learn about langauges they broe me. bUt I did want to comment about the person who said so many poeple simply say what sounds right but cannot explain it.

I made my German teacher who is in her first year, understand that. So many times this year I have said something i class and she points it out as being unique and correct asking me how I knew it, and I am dumbfounded simply going "it sounds right..."

But langauges are dull to me anyhow so i'll leave the thread.

I've no idea, but the sweetening product does look very similar to brown sugar, although it's larger granuled, a touch saline, and smells aromatic. There are Russians living there and the languages oft spoken are a mix of many, so it could very well be.

It's pronounced shāck-kar in their tongue

Re: Languages

Depends on fairly well, or at least by my definition (I don't feel I have a strong enough command on the English language). I study Russian, Hebrew, Eastern Cherokee and Gaelic, though because of school and family I am very very rusty. I have studied Russian the longest, and probably is my favorite language..
But I like the study of language in general. Its hard to spend time on just one when there are sooo many.

Re: Languages

I like Russian (beautiful language) and would like to learn Cherokee - but I haven't got a clue.
I speak the Scandinavian languages (Swedish, Danish and Norwegian) and English + a little German.
When you think about it there's so many words that are common between languages.

True, lots are common. My dad sent me a dictonary on the Cherokee language from North Carolina. The thing is huge! I could not believe how complicated the language is! It gets down to things like having a different way of saying someone is looking at something, depending on whether or not they are facing you

The Inuit (or Eskimo) language has hundreds of words for snow (AFAIK).

Re: Languages

I always heard that, but then I read/saw somewhere not too long ago that was a myth.
There is a myth buster site I ran across before. I wonder if they have anything on. Even if it isn't true, there are some languages out there that have extremely hard grammar. I am still trying to grasp Russian aspect...
