MT's spare time consumer...

Guys, this is what has been taking up my weekends when not working at regular job or on computers - I'm helping our local aviation museum restore this "Phrog" back to its old colors. (Try matching 35 year old paint that isn't there anymore...) It will be a static display only...its flying days are over due to an incident with a bridge....:(
We hope to have it finished up by October when the big fall open house is held.

Re: MT's spare time consumer...

Update! We got a match on the paint! Now I get to mix 10 gallons of paint, getting the utmost accuracy amongst all 10 gallons, then take said paint along with all the reducers, activators, and flatteners packed into the back seat and trunk of a compact car (Cobalt).
Now I gotta get the model and replicate it in small scale....

Re: MT's spare time consumer...

Sorry Mimo...didn't see that post until today...it is the Carolinas Aviation Museum.
Went up today and was handed a scuff pad and told to crawl under and scuff the belly of the heli in preparation for the paint which hopefully will be applied on Monday.
Results: 1 well-taped and scuff-sanded helicopter and one very dirty MT.
Hope to have some "after" pictures soon!

The base grey is in good shape mostly...and we didn't want to have to prime it.
(And we don't have a sandblaster...or at least one that would have the capacity to do the helicopter.)

Re: MT's spare time consumer...

Update!!!
We have 1 VERY green Phrog! Our painter Cyrus hasn't gotten all the stencils and other markings put back on it but it looks great!
Took some pics but my camera decided to eat them for lunch...going back next week hopefully to get some of my own, but in the meantime, here's a link to a photo that our head of restoration posted on the USMC/Combat Helicopter Association - better known as "PopASmoke".

Re: MT's spare time consumer...

It's looking very good. Almost good enough to fly. I can't believe how much it costs to get air worthiness certificates for these classics, which is why so many are just restored for static display, but many do still fly. I'm lucky, living just down the road from Kemble, now home to one of the best displays of classic planes. http://www.airshows.org.uk/2007/airs...le/review.html
