Moscow ranks as the most expensive city to live in.

Re: Moscow ranks as world's priciest city

I read this on the BBC, and I actually find this hard to imagine. Regardless I'm never going to live in Moscow - probably never visit it either - I just see this as astonishing.

Re: Moscow ranks as world's priciest city

Hard to imagine? To get a gasping grasp, go to an big-hotel-chain's website, and attempt to book a room in a fancy hotel in the States and in Russia, and then compare the prices. (To get an idea, see here that for a mere four-star hotel like Marriott Royal Aurora in Moscow, the average price is $658! And that's NOT the most expensive Marriott in Moscow - Tverkaya is the one!) As a comparison test, I virtually booked a Suite for my birthday night this year, and got:
Renaissance New York Hotel Times Square - $599
Renaissance Moscow Hotel - $1,150
Renaissance St. Petersburg Baltic Hotel - $868
Renaissance St. Petersburg Baltic Hotel - $1,591 (Executive Suite)

From Money Weekly:
Quote:
Russian consumers are now so rich that a boutique in Moscow has opened that will only sell items worth over £1m. Russia’s luxury goods market will expand at an annual rate of about 20% in the years ahead, according to the head of JamilCo, a distributor of European brands, says the St. Petersburg Times.
My friend, I've been to Russia some times, and I'd say it is a strong and worthwhile experience for one to go there... This is one of the things that cannot be described - they have to be experienced first-hand. And, in addition, never say never... (Especially when you see the women in the streets, you WILL know you'll never say never, ever again.)

Interesting Zazula !
Too bad the article doesn't explain or gives the main cause as why it is that expensive .

Moscow is incredily $$$. My teacher has been going there for the past 20-25 years taking American students on study trips (Yes, during the cold war too), and he said after the wall fell, it was $$$ for some reason.

Re: Moscow ranks as world's priciest city

I have also seen these thing in the net many times, and I can't say that I'm very surprised. I was born in Moscow and have been living here since then. I have never visited any European countries or USA, but it seems to me that living there will be much more expensive. Well, I don't know. Of course, if you take hotel prices and prices for entertainment for foreigners maybe the prices will be soaring. But the average price of goods is not high even for me, and my salary is not very high because I'm still a student. But I don't have any experience to compare with. Well, I'm going to spend my vacation in the Czeсh Republic, there will be a possibility to check this

I am lured by the possibilities to have good beer for decent price. We've got some imported Czech beer here, but it is not very cheap - about 3-4 US dollars per bottle, I cannot afford it very often.
