Well I must admit I was ready to come in and great, tough luck etc, but when you actually read the claims it was well out of order IMHO, such a thing must be done on a sliding scale, that was nothing more than a jobs worth response with blanket coverage, OK the message goes out loud and clear, and I bet she will NEVER speed again in her life, to that end you can see why they set such a penalty, but what she did is in no way deserving of that, at worst maybe a fixed penalty notice or similar, which even she agreed and expected would be the case and would of accepted, but this, it's a joke TBH, it's not like people were diving out of the way for their lives.

Re: Reality bites for teen speeder
Well if most teens weren't hot rodders it would be way out of line. However it's like the bad kid in class where the whole class has to take a quiz for his actions.

Re: Reality bites for teen speeder
I agree...i bet her jaw dropped when the penalty came through..a tad too extreme though...but doesnt the USA also have the 3 strikes and your out law?...even if your 3rd offence is jaywalking..its 20 years inside...something harsh i know
Its the same over here, the penalties should be judged more on a personal level and sliding scale...such as murder...how can a women who has been beaten all her married life suddenly snap and kill the husband only to be treated virtually the same as a bank robber who kills...luckily judges are becoming more realistic in these cases and looking at the provocations..though theres still too many sitting in their ivory towers not having a clue whats going on in the real world...though whats that old saying...the laws an ***...would you agree? |

Problem in the UK is in court the truth has no bearing, it's a case of who can put up the best front, the judges as you say are so out of touch with everyday life etc it isn't even funny, they sit in their ideal world in their private property with similar neighbours and assume everyone is as lucky, I think every judge should have to move into the average persons life for a month and see how the real world lives, then we may start to get some sensible judgements handed out.

If you can't drive properly then you shouldn't drive at all. I think it's totally fair.

Re: Reality bites for teen speeder
100% agree with you...and the judges i would personally drag out of their towers to have a look at the real world are these idiots who keep citing "human rights"....some ******* just committed a crime and is then covered in cotton wool so they are not abused..never mind the poor sod whos lives just been ruined...same as the terror suspects who cant get sent home because its dangerous there?????????
I would stick them on the 1st plane out and if they didnt like it then they can jump...from as high as possible over a rocky outcrop!! Well, got that off my chest at last! |

Re: Reality bites for teen speeder
I think it's fair, next time just don't get caught!
![]() But no, if the law is there, you should follow it. It's obvious she wouldn't care if it was just a fine, so why not go a bit futher? She needs to learn. And if this is the only way to get through to her, so be it. "an infraction the junior driver thought would probably mean a hefty fine and higher insurance bills." - that shows my point. Wouldn't care about that, does care about this, so if it stops her from speeding, I see no problem. |

Like I said, whatever punishment teaches them not to speed (obviously not physical punishment lol!).

A child was nearly killed in front of where I work because someone decided not to obey the speed limit. You punish so as to discourage repeated behaviours. If you can't take the heat the get outta the kitchen. Can't obey the limits then stay off the road.

Re: Reality bites for teen speeder
I think they went overboard though. You can't tell me you've never gone over the speed limit, and this sort of fine is absolutely insane for the transgression.
If it came as a surprise to her, then maybe they should have been more explicit about the laws when they gave her her license. I once waited 5 hours at the department of motor vehicles while they tried to get their computers working. When they finally did, my brother let them know that he didn't appreciate the wait, and the shrew at the counter told my father to teach my brother some manners. My father basically said that he's an adult, and that they dropped the ball so he had every right to say what he did. Anyway, to sum up this nonsensical rant, I'd like to express my gratitude to the state of New Jersey that I'm not living in a fascist police state. Corrupt with an inefficient government, maybe, but at least I'm not paying 500 dollars for a speeding ticket. In fact, I once went 65 miles per hour in a 45 zone during a snowstorm trying to find my way back to where I recognized the roads, and I got pulled over. I explained myself to the officer, and he let me off without even a written warning.

But thats the point, no one was hurt, and I dare anyone to claim they've never gone 12mph over the limit, I'm not saying they shouldn't of been made to pay so to speak, but surely theres more realistic solutions for such a minor infringement that would get the same message across, maybe make them a crossing assistant for a few months so they appreciate the situation more perhaps.

Re: Reality bites for teen speeder
I think us lot living in England will soon find it impossible to speed anyway..the M3 motorway near me has just had Variable speed cameras installed...very rare to have any accidents on it...just a cash cow to get money off the poor motorist! And these cameras are being put up at traffic lights, normal roads and no doubt soon at the top of Ben Nevis!!

Re: Reality bites for teen speeder
As I tell my teenage kids: this falls into the "The Law Doesn't Apply To Me" area. Anyone can miss a stop sign - ignoring one is a whole other thing. Speeding says either you're not paying attention or you don't think the limit should apply to you. Either way, you should not be on the road.
She said "One speeding ticket doesn't mean someone's a bad driver." I say <TWIBAT> , sure it does - when you've only been driving 6 months. And, it's only for 90 days. Message to her friends: the law does apply to you so pay <TWIBAT> attention. (I do agree that the $500 is excessive.)

Re: Reality bites for teen speeder
Personally, i think speeding tickets are a TWIBAT waste of time. The money from them should be reinvested in proper traffic officers like we used to have to catch the people breaking 'real traffic laws'. Speeding tickets make no distinction between speed and dangerous driving. An officer who is on the ground can. Speed isnt the issue, the person behind the wheel is.

Speeding tickets make no connection with dangerous driving, but speed itself DOES. You go too fast, you are more likely to crash. You go to slow, you are more likely to crash. If you stick to the speed limit, and drive well, then you are way less likely to crash. If you are a chav, then you will just crash whatever the speed. |

Re: Reality bites for teen speeder
but so many other factors affect your chances of crashing that speed is insignificant. Say for example, a motorway, at about 10Pm for arguments sake. The road is more likely to be clear so driving faster than the limit of 70mph isnt an issue. Its all to do with relative speed. I think the tests should be harder but people should be given much more leniency on speed limits based on their perception of the road conditions. Obviously there should still be laws like dangerous driving and driving without due care and attention as these do cause accidents.
