Re: Stopping smoking

I quit smoking completely 2 years ago. I just stopped, no cutting down, no patches, no nonsense. I promised myself I wouldn't even try unless I was 100% committed to it, it doesn't work otherwise. Don't 'try' it, just do it, and don't pretend that the odd one is ok, don't pretend to cut down because the only person being fooled is you, you're only pretending to quit and not actually allowing yourself to do it.

The first week isn't too bad, it's a good milestone, during the second and third weeks I was really angry at everyone and everything and by the end of week 7 I was almost free from the addiction, although I still got urges and still do. It never really goes away, it just gets easier to deal with. Find something to do with your hands, I juggled remote controls for the tv etc. while I was just sat there doing nothing and don't worry about putting on a bit of weight, you can lose that later - eating stops the urge to smoke for a while just like vice versa.

I wish you all the luck in the world mate.

Your joking right....
I enjoy my cigarettes,it is one outlet I have in life.
I don't know about any other country, but here in Australia they have made smokers lives agony.
No smoking here. No smoking there. Who do they think they are!!!!!
If a person wants to smoke it should be there right, without the goodie to shoes of Australia telling us any different, As you can see this is a very sore point with me...
But too anybody else who wishes to give it up I applaud you..Your a better person than myself...

Re: Stopping smoking

I agree with MunkyPhil, you really have to be committed. I will be doing the same thing hopefully this week. I've tried patches, chewing gum, tablets and hypnosis and none worked, mainly cause I wasnt ready. With what hubby and I spend on smokes a week we could have a fantastic holiday twice a year and its not doing my health any good.
My suggestions would be try to avoid places like the pub etc where everyone smokes for the first couple of weeks. Out here its the beer garden outside cause theres no smoking in any public building.
Grab a pencil, rubber band, whatever to keep your hands busy. Above all dont give in. If you're somewhere and you end up having 1 smoke dont throw in the towel. and say well thats it then. Keep trying and good luck.

Thanks for the support exept Jen56
Must admit had 1 today and it was fantastic
But had a bad aftertaste ive never drank so much water or brushed my teeth in my life
But even after this short time my lungs seem to be growing by the minute and i feel the difference
the only side effect i seem to have is i seem to be losing friends as i am not joining them for a puff
Guess i will find some new ones

Re: Stopping smoking

I gave up smoking 5 years ago and it was easy...though you have to be mentally prepared to do it and have some motivation to succeed. Previous to that, I tried to give up on two occasions and as I wasn't ready and lacked motivation, I failed.

However, I wasn't really a heavy smoker anyway (was too much into sports and athletics) but I used to enjoy a smoke in the morning and after some meals.

The best advice I can give you is get your missus pregnant...may sound odd but that was the motivation for me. As soon as I found out I was going to be a Daddy, I gave up hehehe I did it the same way as MunkyPhil, no cutting down, no patches...cold turkey all the way! There were some rough moments but the feeling you get when you know you have beaten it is good.

One thing for sure is that once you do beat it, you become the worst type of smoker...an ex-smoker and being around smoke will become a nightmare. You can smell it on your clothes even if you just walk past someone who's smoking and being in smoky atmospheres becomes hell on earth!

Best of luck mate

oh come on. Think about others aswell. Smoking harms you and others around you. If people breath the second hand smoke in, its just as bad as smoking one in your mouth. Have you ever heard of passive smoking???

Ive never smoked anything in my life, and never will. There is one easy way to die, and thats to kill yourself right there right now. Why punish yourself and others around you when you might aswell get it over straight away.

Id much rather spent my well hard earned cash on a nice lass, house etc rather than smoking it.

Re: Stopping smoking

I didn't start smoking until I was 16 despite peer presure. I started because I legally could and it was the worst thing I ever did. Over the years I've tried to give up smoking many times without success. I remember on one occasion walking 2 miles in the pouring rain to the nearest all-night garage to get some. I smoked about 50-60 a day and my cough was almost a trademark. Everyone knew where I was because they could hear me. Then six years ago I developed atherosclerosis and could barely walk more than fifty yards before the pain in my calves (intermittent claudication) made me stop. I was rushed (by NHS standards 2 weeks is rushed ) into hospital for an aorto-bifemoral bypass and was told I was lucky not to have had my legs amputated. During the ten days I spent in hospital my cough disappeared at about the same rate that my temper got worse. The surgeon said he wasn't going to order me to stop smoking but that if I continued I might not be so lucky the next time. Having already gone ten days without a cigarette and the thought of losing my legs as an incentive, I resolved to keep it up. I shall never forget the day I stopped as it was 11 September 2001 and the first I heard about the Twin Towers was when I regained consciouness at midnight, having been in surgery since 8 am (BST) that morning. I thought people were joking.

During the early stages, a trick I was told, that certainly helped, was to concentrate on something else whenever I got the urge. Previously when I'd tried to stop, I let the urge get the better of me, but I found this really helped. Within a matter of one or two minutes the urge would go. The urge would come back so I did the same thing again (and again and again ) but gradually the time between urges lengthened. It also helped that most of my colleagues were non-smokers. After one year I considered myself a non-smoker and now I don't even think about it, even when people are passing cigarettes around. (I'm glad to say I didn't turn into one of those "holier than thou" ex smokers.)

The moral of this story is that you have got to want to stop. If you don't really want to stop no amount of patches, gum or anything else will help. So if you've made up your mind donie, you can do it. Good luck.

Re: Stopping smoking

donie I am very proud of you for giving up smoking...I gave up smoking many many years ago, and my weight ballooned double when I did, as I compensated cigarettes for lollies and cheesecakes. After about 10 months of that happening I took smoking up again, and this is the only reason I smoke now and that excess weight has gone..

Carsey to you I say <TWIBAT> How do you!! Yes! I know about passive smoking etc, but to me this is balony..I had a very dear Aunt who passed away 5 years ago because of Lung Cancer!! You know what my dear Aunt never smoked a cigarette in her whole entire life, nor was she subjected to passive smoking either.....So now what do you have to say? This is one problem I have with people who think they are goodie two shoes....

Re: Stopping smoking

Smoking isn't the only cause of lung cancer so some people who get the disease may well have been exposed to other sources.

@JohnthePilot: Man that sounds rough but I'm glad you gave up and I hope your intermittent claudication has improved as I read somewhere that with gradual exercise you can 'train' your ciculation to be more efficient.

I didn't even need to do any training. As soon as I got over the op I was able to run again. The effect was amazing.

You have to force yourself to quit... when you hit that "<TWIBAT> I need that <TWIBAT>'ing cigarette or I'm going to <TWIBAT>'ing kill some <TWIBAT>'ing <TWIBAT>, sit back and re-evaluate... force yourself, do an activity that takes your mind off the situation... watch a movie, play a video game.

It was to be cold turkey and you have to want it... I went in half heartily trying to quit and I only went about 17 hours.

At that point it felt like my blood was on fire... I tried to force myself but gave in... just don't give in.

I think you've made the same points I did Drew and I don't think they can be repeated enough. First, you have to want to give up and second having made the decision, stick to it. You can't just have the odd one; ( I originally put f-a-g but the censor changed it to ***. It will accept fags though. How strange.) it puts you back to square one. Try and do something to take your mind off fags rather than dwelling on the fact that you can't have one. That's where I failed the first one hundred and something times I tried.
