Cheering not allowed at Indiana graduation

INDIANAPOLIS, May 21 Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Eugene White has forbidden parents from cheering when their graduate's name is called.

The new policy is aimed at returning a sense of decorum to high school graduations and to ensure each graduate's name is heard, The Indianapolis Star reported.

White sent letters explaining the policy to each graduate this month. The letter told students how attending a graduation ceremony is a privilege, not a right, and that 30 school police officers will be on hand to enforce the rules.

"The graduation commencement is the completion of a 12-year program of study," White wrote. "It is a joyous time, a proud time and a formal time. It is not a party. It is not a pep rally." IPS parent Sally Flood, whose daughter Maire is set to deliver an address at Tech High School, said she has come to enjoy the clapping and cheering that goes on at graduation.

She added that as long as the person reading the names pauses then the missing of names is not a problem.

"Some kids overcome tremendous challenges to get through," Flood said. "We sometimes cheer for the kids we know struggled, especially if no one else does."

Re: Cheering not allowed at Indiana graduation

It makes sence since some kids (like me) would be left out.

Re: Cheering not allowed at Indiana graduation

I thought a parent would be able to proud of the child's achievements. Graduating is one of them, but then I suppose it is up to the schools superintendents and the policies of the schools. That's the problem things always get changed..Rules especially.

I can see both sides, i can understand if everyone is cheering they wont here names and it would take longer, but it would be good for parents, family or friends to cheer when they here the name.

And Kalim i would cheer for you anyday!

Uhh, it's 1 g0t 0nw3d, not Kalim

I can totally see both sides as well. Cheering for each person shows happiness and exaltment that these people are finally graduating, and that their hard work has paid off.

But not cheering after each name makes sure that everyone';s name is heard, and that it goes by faster, cause I know that some people won't want to be there (like me next year )

I'd ignore the rule and make a big mess when they "school officer" attempts to arrest me. Something like this would make me wanna show up to graduation.

Re: Cheering not allowed at Indiana graduation

My youngest sister's graduation was held in the Alamodome (hueg indoor sports arena) and the place was packed. The only rule was no air horns. Bullocks! I heard more than a few being blown for certian people. The point is that you can't keep us from celebrating what we want to celebrate. Unless you're in China.

What are they going to do? "Sorry give me back the dipolma, your mom cheered out of turn..."

Re: Cheering not allowed at Indiana graduation

Yup, I remember our school tried that in the states a few years ago. my buddy was telling me about. Didn't work, they had 4 cops there, handling some 5,000 poeploe when they started making a lot of nose, and the principle asked the police to do their job.

I can't imagine what kind of look the police gave the principle cause they didn't do anything.
