London Icon lost
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6675381.stm
The icon that is so prominent to toruists and people doing the marathon! caught fire at 0455GMT(Cutty Sark). Luckily, if you can call this incident that, most of the masts and sails etc were in storage as the decks were being redone. Some reports claim a faulty builders gas cylinder was to blame, other point to arson. The fire service are treating it as "suspicious" which in england can mean anything from arson to bascially they havent got a clue!!! That part of London, near canary Warf came to a complete standstill as local roads were closed due to safety issues. A tragic incident for all the people who rely on this icon for their income, in tourism and as a museum. The builders must be in hiding, becuase if it was a faulty gas cylinder, they will get a complete rollicking!!!

Re: London Icon lost
That is a tragedy. If it was arson, let's hope the police can find the perpetrators. If due to negligence by the restorers I hope their insurance is up-to-date.

Re: London Icon lost
Sorry to sound so blunt but your clearly culturally enept, this is a key part of London, and a big tourist attraction and there are only two in the world, or one now. What i found laudable was the fact that the police were asking for any eyewitnesses...yes clever, i know london never sleeps, but 0445GMT is ridiculous!!!

One is a national historic landmark which recieves hundreds of thousands of visitors and gives pride to the British people and should be cherished as a piece of history, a tribute to a time when Britain was the best in the world (with the exception of the US, if I need to explain why I will). The other is just a piece of hardware, and since there are millions of people who still use floppies, they're not obsolete yet. But you can't compare a hard disk to a floppy disk, they're not the same thing.

Re: London Icon lost
ehhhh... you can't expect something to stay around forever... I'm a fan of history, but this stuff never bothers me... the Cutty was a fine specimen of ship but I view it in the same line as our oldest ship Ole' Iron Sides, if it sank or caught fire... its going to where all its friends are... bottem of the ocean and should not weep for it. Let history take its course.

Re: London Icon lost
I shall treat that with the contemp it deserves.
I'll challenge you to keep up with us on one of our weekends away. The last one involved 1000 miles riding, four clubhouses in three countries and no sleep for three days.
