Average home has 104 channels

NEW YORK (AP) — Bruce Springsteen once grumbled about having 57 TV channels, with "nothin' on." Now, the average American has nearly double that.

The typical American home received 104 television channels in 2006, Nielsen Media Research said on Monday, up from 61 in 2000.

In 1990, the typical number of channels was 33, Nielsen said. Two years later, Springsteen's "57 Channels (And Nothin' On)" was released.

The number of channels Americans receive at home is growing faster than the desire to actually watch them.

Last year, viewers watched only 15 percent of the stations available to them for any appreciable length of time; in 2000, they watched 22 percent of what they could surf through, Nielsen said.

Re: Average home has 104 channels

So when's Springsteen going to release his new single '104 channels and nothing on'?

Thumbs Up Re: Average home has 104 channels

lol I must have several hundred channels, depending how you count them, satellite goes up to 999 but obviously not all are used, and some are just radio, but equally there are many channels running in set time slots on the 1 channel, so you could get 3 or 4 channels all running on the same transponder, but there have been many new channels since I last counted them up.

Re: Average home has 104 channels

I have 4 channels; bbc 1 and 2, ITV and Channel 4. Thats it, and thats all i need as i use my pc more nowadays. It would suffice if the goverment werent pestering us all to upgrade to Digital. I dont want digital. I see the way forward as tv on demand being streamed through the internet. This move is clearly a way for the goverment to bombard us with further propoganda to try and pursuade us the war in Iraq was worth it!!!!

We just have a freeview box, but I would count that as... 0 channels, as they all suck.

Wait, actully wantever Life of Mars is on, is the only good channel, though last one today, meaning 0 tomorrow...

no cable, get air broadcast, and then i only watch a couple of shows, so i could get away with only those 3 channels. cbs (ncis, and numb3rs), pbs(nova, nature and nat geo specials), and i think the last one is nbc(raines), but i'm not sure.

I have a 150 channels and I only watch Discovery, History, and Adult Swim. I use to watch G4 back when it was Tech TV but I can't stand the new format. And lastly in my rant when the hell is VH1 going to show something other than "I Love New York"

Re: Average home has 104 channels

We have cable but only have 68 channels. Our cable provider keeps calling us up wanting us to upgrade to digital cable. I asked them "Is it going to be the same price that I am paying now?" and they reply "Well no, it will be about $15 dollars more plus the rental on the digital cable box."
I politely replied " Then I don't want it. I will take it if you guarrantied that I will pay the same price." They just said that they couldn't do it. and I tell them well I can't do it then.
We normally watch the local networks plus travel channel, HGTV, Food Network, History channel, Discovery channel, TLC, A&E, FX, Bravo, TCM.

I'm a big fan of Amazing Race. Not so much the drama but all the different places they go to.

Thumbs Up Re: Average home has 104 channels

Similar to me, HD TV has launched over here and to get it you have to pay an extra £10, and thats to get what you already get, the only difference is you get maybe around 10 or so channels that are currently being produced in HD, so like yourself I refuse to pay more for what I already get, I have all the movie and entertainment channels etc, pretty much everything except for sports and any pay per view channels, you'd never be able to watch them all and keep up with them, way to many.

I hear ya! I have digital phone and high speed Internet so they're always trying to sell me digital cable. I'm not home enough to enjoy it and I don't like the idea of paying another $50/mo for maybe 4 good channels out of hundreds.
