Re: Baby Chicks

O! I want the Unidentified Variety one!!!!!!!

The one whose name isn't TIFFANY!!!!

Who decided the not-Tiffany one was being shunned by the Tiffanys? Maybe it's the other way around?

Only self-hating creatures do Polish jokes or R bigots of any kind, OK?

I think I saw the documentary this trailer is from; it was on PBS.......it was very socio-culturally significant.

Is that Willie Nelson doin the soundtrack? Jeeze...he's everywheah...... Cause Vince Gil is waaay above this kinda thing.

Re: Baby Chicks

Oh, you bring back memories. I am probably the only one around here who was born and raised on a farm. Used to raise those Leghorns by the dozens and always took them for my 4-H project. Won some prizes with them a few years while younger.

Believe it or not, they aren't that easy to raise and are a pain in the neck to take care of. In fact, my grandfather who lived about ten miles from us used to own a hatchery, so had pretty easy access to chicks most of the time.

Don't feel sorry for the (what looks like a Rhode Island Red) other chick, that one has the whole side and doesn't have to fight for access. That one will do fine and will be accepted.

Those were the days that one just doesn't forget. Thanks mimo for the memory view.

Re: Baby Chicks

O! Thank U so much, Tumble, for the zoological insight into the interesting one!

Could B a grass is always greener thingy....but I think anyone who was raised on a farm...is very lucky, indeed...and 4 many reasons.

Did U raise any other species 4 yr 4-H projects????? Bet YOUR chicks weren't fed steroids; bet they were also not so confined that they suffered.....bet U gave them the best care.....that the reality is exhausting is no surprise at all.

Re: Baby Chicks

Hello there Jilly, how are you? Nice to see you again.

Yes, I think that I was lucky to be raised on a farm. Country life is very special to those of us who have experienced it. In my life, I moved to the big city for my University education. Stayed in the metropolitan areas (different ones) seeking fame and fortune (got some fame, not much fortune) and later on moved back to the country.

Now have a little plot of 8 1/2 acres of woods on a hill just outside of a rather small town of 15,000 people. Our house sits on top of the hill in the middle of that woods. Otherwise, no close neighbors. One can look out over the town most of the year and it is beautiful. Kind of like going back to my roots. Oh, won't raise chickens again, had enough of that.

Just thought I would share that with you. Take care and have a great evening.

Addendum: In answer to your revised, we raised mostly dairy cows, a few beef cows from time to time, had horses and ponies, and pigs a couple of times...don't like to raise pigs at all, so that didn't last long. Anyhow, yep, have done most of that, plus entered vegetables from our garden in projects regularly. Really a country bumpkin!

Re: Baby Chicks

U R blessed.....also smart. And FORTUNE...doesn't only comprise the currency with the dead presidents.

May have that kind.....and not the kind that matters the most.
Closest I got 2 4-H....and this was vast departure from anything I was raised to, forget my peers.....was early rabid tropical fish phase.....including breeding labyrinth types (bubble-nest builder).....and when I was 9 wearing my mom down to let me enter a community tank competition in a State Fair. Which...incredibly, I won! (Best in show, both the junior divisin and the adult!)

But farm life is pithy and rich....and so fosters work ethic in the most sacred ways, I think.....and lessens the danger of being estranged from the earth...both literally and figuratively; also infuses us with the reality of The Process....versus the goal.....also, I think is very Emersonian re autonomy and self-sufficiency!

But perhaps I am being my usuall romantic self. Nah...I dun thin so.

My growing orchids indoors in Manhattan.....in part, represents a little slice of that level of nourishment. Including making the the when I have none.

Thanks 4 sharing!
