<TWIBAT> Dells...

Why does it take this P4 2.6Ghz PC with 512MB of RAM about 1 solid minute to open a browser window? WHY?!

This thing has about 16GB free space out of 20GB total. I've seen less do much more.

Re: <TWIBAT> Dells...

Perhaps all the crap Dell pre-loads their systems with? Has anyone here ever put a regular non Dell branded copy of XP on a Dell? I would try it myself but I do not own a Dell and do not plan to. But I'd like to see if this made a difference.

We buy a volume XP license and create custom images. No Dell software is included. Just XP, Office, and the software for handling library items.

Re: <TWIBAT> Dells...

In that case, deductive reasoning only leaves us with one possibility. If software is not the cause, then hardware must be. Low cost components anyone?

I don't really like dells that much either. But I like the BIOS of Dell Inspiron and Latitude laptops. It has many more options than the BIOS of most laptops.

Oh man, that is seriously where Acer let us down...

Maybe the companies are just opposite to eachother... All but the BOIS is better with Acer though

Re: <TWIBAT> Dells...

Personally I would never steer anyone towards getting a Dell. I've had enough experience with other people's to make up my mind. EB is dead on: Dells are slooow. I USED to think it was because most were only running 128 megs of RAM, but I've since realized something else is at play here. Now I can only think to attribute it to Dell's customization of it's hardware.

The lesson here is custom builds from a reputable dealer, or the one you build yourself, is always the way to go. You'll always be much happier in the end.

Re: <TWIBAT> Dells...

I wonder how well a Dell would run if you installed something that's not a memory hog like Win95.

Re: <TWIBAT> Dells...

Possibly quite well, but then what programs could you run on it? I'm sure it could run DOS 6.22 at lightning speed.

Not to mention the last known copy of 95 is in a government warehouse next to the Ark Of The Covenant.

Re: <TWIBAT> Dells...

Too many additions/changes to default browser, or security software hindering the speed. Like SpybotS&D does for me.

512mb is not bad and is not good either .

1giga ram will improve the speed , and sometimes a good defrag will help the response time of your hardrive .
You may need a good third party defrag. software , not the basic defrag that comes with xp .

Have you cleaned out the cache? Run Disk Cleanup. Also go to "C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5" and clean out everything in there.

I will never go with another dell ... not even for a monitor.
