European PS3 has less functionality than US, Japan
Man, this is just getting ludicrous.
Not only are European PS3 buyers getting gouged in pricing terms - paying as much as 40% more for the console than our brethren overseas - but it turns out that European consoles are actually going to have less functionality, too. How can this be? Well, in a bid to cut the cost of making the PS3, the hardware chips that enable PS2 backwards compatibility are being stripped out. Stripped out. The chips will be replaced with software emulation, with the result that backwards compatibility for European consoles will be, according to Sony, significantly less. According to Reuters, "The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as the U.S. and Japan models," a Sony spokesman said. "Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3." Great. Most people probably wouldn't mind about not having backwards compatibility, but the fact that US and Japan get it and we don't is, frankly, galling. Let's face it - Sony's deal is getting worse by the day. http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2007/02...than_us_japan/

So what happens now is that all the European PS3 owners will go to dodgy sites and get their Playstations mod-chipped to be backwards compatible, and the new chips will also allow pirate copy games to run, the same as the old PS2 mods.

LMAO, Sony just enjoys screwing themsevles don't they?
I lan a lot and I know a lot of european gamers who love console games and used to love the PS line, thats since changed... Most of the die hards alreadys got their PS3s (Illegal importing from the states) I don't know what sony thinks its doing, but cutting off features on the PS3 for a already 40% higher avg then what the rest of the world pays for it is a bit well stupid... For the price of a PS3 60 GIG in europe I could build a pretty decent gaming rig... In fact last night I was at a lan party, and we even got to talking about next gen consoles the general opinion was they had either all bought a xbox360, wii or both and had no intentions on getting a PS3. Quite frankly sony is getting pounded first by the battery recall and now by the failure of the PS3? They are talkinga bout a PS4, frankly i'll be impressed if sony is even around for the next gen console releases. Last edited by Nik00117; 02-25-2007 at 09:36 AM. |

Well I'm not a gamer so it wouldn't affect me either way.. but the closest one to me who is, is my nephew
Now first of all we got it in November as I was on travels. I know many industry workers so knew of its release date far in advance. Nephew lives in the UK though. At that time I was told I can take it back home for the nephew from Hong Kong... wrong. I sent a letter to SCEI and they denied me permission to move it out of the country of purchase. The reasoning: "all importing and exporting of this product, including PS, PS2 and PS3 from its intended country of sale and use, without our prior explicit permission, is illegal". Right. So next I inquired from insiders and found that they would not be mainly responsible for European PS3 but the SCEE would. I knew 2 men and a lady from their but had lost contact over the last 2-3 years. Managed to contact them and they forewarned me, don't get it. So I didn't really know what to say - I had already purchased it! The minute anything in connection with PS3 of news hit the net, my PDA beeped and ah! My peeve has showed up once again. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe now have decided to make most of all the PS2 games incompatible with our releases, the hardware is less and thus cheaper to produce, a delay of over 4 months from when America got the 20GB and 60GB versions; the highest being for $599 with almost full backward compatibility, and we (Europe/Australia) only get the 60GB version, in UK for £425 on 23rd March for the equivalent of $835!! ![]() Thats MS territory now and this is their exact attitude. Because Europe is a bigger, more profitable market, they're exploiting it nefariously. Once: buy all your new games and forget the old. Two: Cheaper to manufacture without the software emulation chips, so more profit. Three: AND with a higher sale price in the end! |

I understand what you're saying there Kalim, but it is a very stupid move from Sony. As you can already see, it has put off many people from buying it, and therefore they will be loosing out on lots of money...

I don't really know the release date here, but I have spoken, and seen on forums (not just this one) loads of people who are saying they don't like what Sony have done, and will not be buying the PS3.
