Nik00117 I'm not one of those hard core guys you can find in any field, but I do lift weights and used to on a serious level and have took part in comps many times. I used to do it as part of various sports from a young age but continued with fitness later on. Never tried getting bulked to much just for strength (like that guy who grew up lifting sand buckets and can thus bi curl +65KG with 30inch bi's cold
).You're figures are in pounds? ![]() Haven't done any deadlifts or bench comps since 2 years now. The last comp I entered at a local gym we were staying near for work was a 60KG bench, burnout reps one, followed by a bi curl and a dead lift one. I am more than twice your age though You might have heard of someone named Karl in this field? (African/Canadian/don't recall his surname/won't be advertised-documented much/not pro/does it for fitness). He does 3 reps of each workout, 3-2 times a week, thats all. He's a good fella, humble and hardly chats about weights ironically, and we trained together for about 3 months while I was in Nottingham, UK (where he came to break some records and we met). This is 4 years ago, his stats around 13stone, 6ft and lifted twice around (over) 300pound barbell and equally good deadlift/squat/bi curl/ab curl (maybe as good as this for the squat/deadlift - don't recall which one). Best I've seen with my own eyes pound for pound and nothing like other powerlifters bodywise or stedaholic bodybuilders. He's also a good boxer due to his pretty light weight and flexible build, not much bulk at all. Haven't heard from him in 2 years so don't have any idea what happened with him but his size is quite small for a weightlifter of any category and shocking at first site when you see him lift +800lbs, like this guy. Karl looks like a model into swimwear advertising TBH, absolutely nothing like a powerlifter but he's just strong. He's known in the pro field very well but seems to abhor fame and stays clear. If ever anyone wanted to train in this field, he's the man seriously. I can't find his contact though or I'd pass you his email addy. I've been looking for it for 3 months now ![]() The tips he gives will really make it easier to gain more pounds on the totals. The 14 yr old lad who holds UK record of benching 104KG (close by) was advised by him twice and jumped from beings tuck on 83KG to 96KG inside 3 weeks. |

I used to lift regularly, got up to a max bench of 220 (2x), squat 350 or so... (650+ on the machine - anything it could handle, I could and would do... haha - most of them maxed out with 6-8 45s on each side + whatever the plate weighed. but machines don't really count...) I curled about 45 - 50 lbs for regular reps (6 sets of 10), but I don't really know what my max would be. Honestly, I've never attempted dead lifting, though I know I have little trouble picking up weight and pulling it up. I'm also about 5'10" and 185 lbs.
Unfortunately, I haven't worked out regularly for a while now (I got a job (20 hrs a week in addition to college work) and I've been way too busy...) so now I can't lift quite as much, but supposedly I'll be able to get it back quickly when I'm able to start up again. (I used to work out 3x a week, 2 hours each time - mostly bench and curls, no real need to work out my legs... lol) Last edited by -=Rousseau=-; 02-22-2007 at 07:25 PM. |

Focus on your triceps. A lot of your lifting power depends on your arms and the biceps don't be as large nor powerful on people as the tricep ability. My nephew lifts for fitness and he's benching 125KG (80KG BD) can do it 7 reps. The main reason being because he naturally lifted 70KG on his shoulders when he first began although he had biceps/forearm/triceps as weak as anything. He couldn't bi curl 10KG back then, no way. But one part always needs to be stronger for most people to compensate for the others lacking. There's a difference in your deadlift and bench that shows you can improve largely on the bench. Once you can get more on that you're deadlift will go up too. All of it depends on your BD. The more you have the less less one requires for the same weight. Naturally its easier to handle weight with larger size/weight. Its why some start of really fat and big and then when they achieve high lifts they turn more into bodybuilding like Juoko Ahola and trim down with body size/fat.
