Well that could be a good reason for the high rise in crime rate here in Dallas.

Not being in the US right now, its actually well spread on the outside that US education standards have now slipped and are continuing to slide further. Only a few years till China is academically superior and just look at all the math/physics whiz kids and you'll see why.

Hi,

That is certainly a sad day in education. I do wonder if the very large number of illegals in that area conributes to that figure? No, not putting this in any context, but just wanted to know if that had a greater impact on their dropout rate as compared to other nearby states. I do know that the dropout rate is out of control in almost all states, but not nearly as high as this report states.

We had an op at Hamburg at 5am this morning and in London now, Fr4665.

Anything undisciplined reaps only bad. Countries who haven't experienced the flashiness and luxury bathing with status have a drive to get somewhere and pursue a good future-to-come (i.e.India), working hard and knowing that only they can set their future aright...contrary to the far western mentalities nowadays or the "ghetto" ones. Ignorant societies also lay huge influence on a neighborhood, which is obviously well known for long but not much is done about it. A minor "change" decent change takes a century to make at these rates and the blame game is always the easiest to play.

Probably - but not just illegal - but the large number of Hispanic in total, who as a group have a very low (compared to whites) level of HS graduation.

Quote:
High school graduation rates are calculated using a measure called the Cumulative Promotion Index or CPI. This indicator, developed at the Urban Institute, offers several significant advantages over other commonly reported graduation rate statistics. Paired with data from the U.S. Department of Education's Common Core of Data (CCD), we are able to compute graduation rates for the high school class of 2001 in nearly every public school district in the nation.

The findings presented in this report do not paint a flattering portrait of high school graduation for public schools in the United States.

* The national graduation rate is 68 percent, with nearly one-third of all public high school students failing to graduate.
* Tremendous racial gaps are found for graduation rates.
* Students from historically disadvantaged minority groups (American Indian, Hispanic, Black) have little more than a fifty-fifty chance of finishing high school with a diploma.
* By comparison, graduation rates for Whites and Asians are 75 and 77 percent nationally.
* Males graduate from high school at a rate 8 percent lower than female students.
* Graduation rates for students who attend school in high poverty, racially segregated, and urban school districts lag from 15 to 18 percent behind their peers.
* A great deal of variation in graduation rates and gaps among student groups is found across regions of the country as well as the states..... Source HERE

Not just the illegals, it's mostly the Hispanics who are "pro-Mexico man!!" and were born here and have never actually been to Mexico. I have Mexican friends who make fun of them, and I have a really good friend who moved here from Argentina a few years ago and also makes fun of them.

And honestly, this is not surprising. I don't know how schools are elsewhere, but here the kids just do not care. I don't pity them because I want people to make my burgers at Sonic, but I hate that resources are wasted on them.
As my brilliant English teacher said, "We [the school] are set-up so that the masses fail".

In many cases, none of the involved parties care. The student certianly doesn't, the parents don't in spite of the fines accrued, and the schools don't care because it's one less unruly body in their building. I received a synodical education (read: private school) which was a bit different. The unfortunate side is that many private schools are merely dumping grounds for students the public education system has given up on.
