'Liar' Pays The Price in Public

If you break the law you may be sentenced to tell the entire community. It's a new form of punishment from the Houston County District Attorney's office, one that turned hundreds of heads Wednesday.

It's called the Personal Responsibility Program. District Attorney Kelly Burke is tired of people lying to police and thinking they can get away with it.

That's according to Assistant District Attorney Jason Ashford.

The D.A.'s office recently created the program, which lets defendants choose an alternative punishment proposed by the D.A. instead of a traditional sentence. Wednesday the first convicted criminal to choose this program walked out of jail time on Watson Boulevard in Warner Robins.

PENNY TUTTLE, ONLOOKER:
"I think that's great, I love that, that is awesome, I mean that is actually a punishment that could be a deterrent, I think it's terrific."

Houston County Assistant District Attorney Jason Ashford says Breuwet lied to police when he reported he was robbed in the Books-A-Million parking lot in August.

He adds Breuwet is convicted of false statements and writings as well as false report of a crime. The possible penalties range from five years probation to five years in prison. The PRP is a pre-trial diversion order.

Ok, I think that is just stupid, and I'm sure it goes against human rights... Well, against our law!
I would say it is better way to make people hate the police even more, and they will probably just go against them more.

We do prohibit cruel and unusual punishment, but the man was given a choice.
