Although I am a little upset that you would lump the Stones in with the rest of those pretenders (ezpecially Nirvana, the most overrated of garage bands) .... Try to find some:

J. Geils Band - early stuff, say 1973 or so
ZZ Top - again, their early stuff ('72-'74)... metal-blues sound that is awesome
Uriah Heep - songs like "The Wizard" "Easy Living" and "One Way or Another"
Savatage - "Edge of Thorns" - solid album
Bootsy Collins - some traditional 70's funk for flavor
Black Crowes w/ Jimmy Page - phenominal collection of Zepplin tunes. The Crowes showed me a lot with this one.

An odd collection, but some great music. The older stuff will give you some insight to how today's sound came about.

ok i oly have 1 orlling stones song because i heard it on a movie i saw recently and i liked it so i d/l it.

as for nirvana being overrated, i agree, yet some of their stuff is quite good, they display a communicated msg. but who am i to judge.

As for the list u gave me...i havent really heard any of that stuff except maybe a bit of jimmy page, but none the less i wont discard...i will look into..they sound cool.

so what r your thoughts on hendrix then? i like some of his stuff and lenny kravitz.

lol i basically started this thread because i am sick of hearing all that pop music crap (no offense to anyone who likes it.... people ned to remember the good stuff.

cheers big ears

Jimi Hendrix was a guitar god. He paved the way for guys like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Kenny Wayne Sheppard.

Kravitz is solid. I like his style, and he's a good throwback to some traditional rock.

You may also want to check out some Pink Floyd - not the big albums like "Dark Side of the Moon" or "The Wall". Try "The Final Cut" - and make sure you read the lyrics, as it's Roger Waters' best work (IMHO).

How about Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" the best of all PF albums Also Boston, Deep Purple - "Machine Head", Styx, Doobie Brothers, Santana - the early albums and Supertramp. These guys all significantly contributed to the 70's rock. Way better than most of what we hear these days. No offense to the younger generation............LOL

By the way Chevy, I noticed you listed ZZTop in your list. They are my absolute all time favourite band. I have as many of their albums as are available in SA. I agree with you though, the early ones probably rate as their best work, but their later ones are brilliant too. I have about ten of their albums. Southern Rock Rulzzzzz!!!!

Pheral, I believe Jimmy Page was mentioned, so I guess that counts for something.

Among my favorite Hendrix songs are little wing (extended instrumental), All Along the Watchtower, and Bold as Love.

I absolutely love Stevie Ray Vaughan's music, but in moderation- blues is like wine, you don't drink it all the time, and you don't drink it to get drunk.

if you want a listing of classic rock bands, www.kgon.com has quite the impressive list...

i saw the list, and i thought to myself, "i've bever heard half this crap". then i went and listened to the ones i didnt recognize, and low and behold, i do know those songs well, just never knew the name.

What's wrong with being a garage band? They can't be famous?

And Walt, I just realized, I listen to that same radio station. I always thought that it was kgln

Well ... when you put it that way!

I just didn't see Cobain as anything special, and certainly not the "90's Bob Dylan" as some proclaimed him to be.
