I'd like to hear OEM prices as well! I'm not concerned with boxes and literature I won't ever read.

I think MS is missing the boat and I think the PC mfgr's are going to suffer.
If they made a "very basic" version of Vista that had only the services that 99% of users actually use: internet, email, networking that doesn't require ANY HUMAN INTERVENTION, scum-ware protection, a basic photo editor/archiver, and a basic word processor and spread sheet, and a basic budget manager, ... And they sold it for $29.99 retail. They'd sell a gadzillion new machines. They'd could then sell the upgrade for $99 for those who want to graduate to the big leagues. But most would be happy. |

and here i was hopping that ms would have learned by now that there is so much crack copies of xp, and so many havn't even upgraded to xp, because of their outragous priceing. i can get the mac os for 129, or a family pack which allows me to have 5 macs with os x on them for 199. and there is no key that needs to be entered, or activation required.well thats it then, i'm just going to go full apple, and use cossover mac (the mac version of wine) to run my win apps.

I'll stick with XP until I get Linux working...
Then I would dual boot, use linux for most things, but things which arn't compatible, I will use XP. Though I really need to get this Linux to work! I don't think it is compatible with my ;laptop.

I don't want to hijack this thread but why are you all wanting to switch to Linux? I'm not a Linux basher (I've dual booted it for a year or so now) but I can't see not keeping Windows. Even though it is a waste of money, I can't see not living with it.

i only have a windows compatible computer for one thing, and one thing only, games. so if i can get these games to run on my mac, then i'll be able to once again have just one tower on my desk.

I don't see why people whine about the price. Nobody is twisting your arm to upgrade and you won't really "need" to for a while. Or at least until DX10 comes out and makes our DX9 boxes as obsolete as the 8088.
As for me, I'm gonna wait until an OEM of Premium comes out and then upgrade. Until then it'll be XP 32-bit.

I plan on building a new system probably next fall or maybe a little later and if it's out, I'll get an OEM version. Otherwise I'll spend the big bucks. But for now, XP is perfectly fine for me and what I will need/want to do.

Same here. XP is great for now. I'll upgrade after Vista's SP4 is out.
