Well, the average person comes knowing nothing about computers. People who come into my library often need guidance that requires me to go above and beyond normal "helpfulness."
Still, if she's using a computer -I- paid for and an Internet line that -I- pay for I'd be ready to ask her to turn over information.

In the past week I troubleshot three PCs. Some of my classmates are complete idiots.
PC1: TIOTIOSIF (Turn it off, turn it on, suddenly it's fixed.) PC2: Re-installed missing DLLs. PC3: Well, no wonder you can't log on to the internet, the ******* LAN ON YOUR COMPUTE IS DISABLED!! How sad that people are such idiots. That's probably why there are so many computer fixers there are out there, they must get swamped on a daily basis. |

I charged someone $20 for a diagnostic. Of course, that's a flat rate. The problem was that the PC was working fine until it just shut off. Nor warnings, no alarms, just off. I took it home and set it on the work table.
"Hmm, I haet eMachines." I mumbled as I began removing the thumbscrews. Everything on the inside looked fine. No obvious burnouts or scorch marks. Caps looked virtually new. Cables were clean and intact. I plugged it in and tried it. Nothing. No fans, no buzzers, not a thing. I plugged my PSU tester in and the PSU turned on nice and easy. All the proper voltages were good so I tossed the possibility of a bad PSU. I went and grabbed a more powerful test unit I had and tried it. The fans came on. Briefly. They'd spin hard at firs and then settle to an idle speed. The drives did nothing. The CMOS speaker didn't beep to confirm anything and the screen remained dark. I laid the machine on it's side and peered into the depths. I decided to be stupid and stuck my hand in to manually read temperatures. The HSF was fine. NorthBridge was fine. SouthBridge was slightly warm which was fine. Then I saw the MIO controller near the ATX power plug. Touched that and screeched! My poor finger throbbed as I glared at that little black chip. The thing was HOT. I powered down and took the board out. I tried it again to see if a grounding error was at fault. I just got burned again. I went online to determine what all the chip did and what the maximum temperatures were. Needless to say, the values were far below what I was finding so I declared the board dead. End of hi-jack.

You have all these cool, expensive tools, yet you don't have a thermometer?
