Why did you pick the username you have?

Why did you pick the username you use? Any particular reason or meaning behind it?

When I first started out, I used the user name im_comfortablynumb because I am a huge Pink Floyd fan... From the different forums, it has been shortened to numby and so I now be "numby"

My System

i'm going to have to tell two stories, since my name has been changed here.

first off, i was Bob Vila.

i always thought that bob vila was a good sounding name, and so sometimes to be funny, i would leave that name on my voice mail, and it would confuse my friends.

then, i starting using it on my pc as my registered owner, sort of as a way to be anonymous. (no real need to be anonymous, as now i realize)

then, i got tired of being bob.

so, i asked for my name to be changed to WaltSide.

the story behind that, is that when i first moved to vancouver, Wa, (from a small town) i settled into a bad neighborhood. the kind where teenagers stand in the street at 2 am and drink beer with a funnel.

the kind where someone says something about a gun and there's suddenly 20 police cars and 35 police officers all surrounding one intersection.

the kind where you leave your car unlocked and empty, so that the people wont break your windows trying to get in.

that neighborhood is split into two main halves.

i lived on the slightly better half. the neighborhood youths knew that i didnt like having the police showing up all the time, so they all agreed to not be criminals near my house. alot of them were theives, alot of them were drug users and dealers, but they respected my request mostly, and they kept it quiet on the "Walt-Side" of the neighborhood.

people used to yell waltside when they would see me, and i would laugh.
over time, i grew to be friends with some of them, and i watched many of them get arrested now and then, and most of them are settled now, and i still see them from time to time.

i don't live there anymore, so the joke really is an old one, but i still consider it my name in a way, so i use it for all my emails, i write it on things i possess, and so on.

but yeah, thats why i chose it.

( next time ask a simpler question, i damn near typed my fingers off just now... j/k )

Yea Sealy, simpler questions for WaltSide,,, I damn near read my eyes out just now.... LOL!!! j/k,,, Good story Walt... I lived in a place like that once,,, for about a week... Nothing worse then getting in your car first thing in the morning, pre-coffee, starting it, slamming it in gear, punching it at the first open space in traffic,,, only to go nowhere really fast... Get out and find some nice person thought your wheels were dirty and kindly replaced them with four brand new rectangular grey ones.... And I could see the police station from the front door...

Mine is a nickname that I've had since I was 5 or so. Just a shortened version of my last name.

There was a time, not too long ago, where I wouldn't answer to Joe (my real name) because I hadn't been called that in years. Even my commanders called me Sergeant Chevy.

But now I'm just plain ol' Chevy ... or TechnoJoe on the radio.

Well....when I started off repairing computers, I was doing the work mostly at night - REALLY late at night, so I declared myself the Midnight Tech.

Trying to teach Lady Midnight a little about computer repair .... wish I could give her a brain dump...

What makes you say that?

As for my username, a friend of mine called me "The Dumber Drummer" at band camp, and I liked the way it sounded. So I've used that online ever since. Its only been about a year since then though, so it hasn't really proliferated that much, at least not to the point where I get it confused with my real name.

I got my nickname from my first girlfriend at age 17............... you do the sums.................LOL. Nah seriously, I got it at school because I was 6ft 5 and could run like the wind. It started as Stallion but combined with my looks it was decided I wasn't as pretty as a stallion and someone in their infinite wisdom called me Horse. Used it as a nick ever since.

At the time Danrak was unique. But sadly I'm starting to see it used more often over the net. This has lead to me being acused of being someone else when I'm not. I still like it although I do have a nice alt I use sometimes.

I was trying to open up a new hotmail acct. and I tried every combination of words with my first name... "Mike" and everything was taken, so after about 45 min of trying to get an email address, I just put hotmailmike and it went through... I like to have a similar nick for everything online (although I do have a couple) so now my SN everywhere is "Hotmail[Mike]" or something similar.

Hopefully Microsoft doesn't sue me for violating their copyright

My old SN on here was "SociallyInept" but after the server issue was resolved... it turns out my account was deleted... So, I just started over, with a new Screen Name...

Not much of a story behind "Socially Inept" an old girlfriend said I was socially inept... and it kinda stuck...

Lobos is the spanish name for wolves. when i was younger i used to dream about wolves probably since they are loyal and family oriented and i never had either until i got older but that is a different story lol.

Since then I have collected alot of things that have pictures or figurines, blankets, etc with wolves . so pretty much i consider the wolf that brings my life in perspective .

since i am surrounded by wolves every where i look I typed in Lobos.

When I was younger I was a goth and earned the nick Raven due to having the Edger Allen Poe poem memorized. When I left high school I decided to change it to meet my heritage. Though I am a euro mutt I probably have german in me the most. I converted The Raven to german and Now it is Der Rabe or Der for short

Merlin was the call sign for Tim Robins' character in Top Gun. Top Gun was on TV when I was signing up for the board

Trying to find reasonable names for email accounts that hadn't been taken...

jg are my initials and I live in Vernon County....

When I was visiting some new boards, I just typed that in to register, and, viola, it stuck.

You know, Walt, I lived in a "better" part of Phoenix; in fact, we found a house in an area that we could not afford, that we could afford. Still, gang grafetti could be seen, every night we heard/watched the PD helicopters combing our area with huge searchlights, and gunshots could be heard frequently. I remember well an armed gunman being loose in our neighborhood, and my sitting in my backyard, Glock on the table, until 1 am (when a passing PD advised me that he had been found in a house down the street and cuffed up).

I worked PMs and often had a grocery list to fulfill before I went home. I remember walking across a parking lot at a grocery and suddenly having a gang-related shoot out going down, with me in the middle. I drove behaind a parked car and drew the trusty Glock, but the battle subsided and everybody went away.

One Sunday morning, I was heading for the freeway in my trusty GMC 3/4 ton van when I saw a car suddenly swerve to the side of the road. The guy jumps out, puts some fists into a lady who was walking on the sidewalk, and throws her in the car. I did a "cut off" park in front of the car, leapt out and presented myself at the back of the van. Dude was waving a pistol around. In those days, it would take about 1 1/2 seconds for me to draw the weapon and put the sights on his head, which I did. He threw the gun in the backseat, threw it into reverse, and fled. A nice lady pulled up and advised me that she had called the police on her cell phone, complete with license number. I met an officer about 2 blocks from the scene, and he told me that the guy had been apprehended...a "domestic dispute".

Two points here...1, there just wasn't any "john-side" where I came from. 2, I have not reassembled or loaded my Glock in the two years that I have been here. (I do have my trusty old H&R 22 cal with the nine inch barrel loaded up, as we get some varmints around here sometimes, and I will scare them off with a shot).

Boy, am I glad to be "jgvernonco".
