Bob

A COMPUTER has been appointed manager of a US fast-food restaurant chain. Hyperactive Bob, a kitchen production management computer system from Hyperactive Technologies, is being used by Zaxby's which makes takeaway chicken.

The AI computer system takes orders and gives them to staff working at each restaurant.

It uses robotic vision to count the cars in the parking lot, gathers feedback from employees and collects point-of-sale information in real time.

From a management view it can look at historical data to learn about each restaurant and can work out when each one needs staff and other resources. Employees are told how much of which foods to cook and when the food is ready, they tell the computer.

The whole lot runs on .Net and gathers its data by from sensors and cameras installed around the resturant.

This means that that human staff are just the hands and additional sensors of a machine. We are sure that workers at chicken fast-food restaurants already knew that, but up until now it been a figurative rather than literal reality.

The computer is unlikely to attend any leaving bashes for staff down at the local boozer.

Artificial Intelligence:
Hyperactive Bob analyzes historical and real-time data to learn about each restaurant individually. Hyperactive Technologies claims that HB is more accurate than most seasoned employees.
Taking Charge:
Hyperactive Bob uses touch screens to tell employees what to do. Employees are instructed how much of which foods to cook; when the food is ready, they tell HB.

But they do work for humans, 95five-0, they do; e.g. Bob works perfect for Zaxby's stakeholders...
